Agilok & Blubbo [Recorded 1968] (2009). The Inner Space is the stuff of legend. This obscure outfit is best known as the early incarnation of Can and not much is known about them except it featured the core members of Can (Irmin Schmidt, Holger Czukay, Michael Karoli and Jaki Liebezeit) and lasted just a few months before renaming themselves Can and releasing "Monster Movie". They left two ultra-obscure seven inches as their only recorded legacy and only the first of them is credited to The Inner Space, it contained two songs taken from the soundtrack of 1969's underground film Agilok & Blubbo…

Digitally remastered 3 CD set containing three classic albums from the Canadian Rock veterans: Wheatfield Soul (1969), Canned Wheat (1969) and Shared The Land (1970). What makes Wheatfield Soul so sought after is inventive themes that found their way onto later albums. 'These Eyes' remains timeless; it is the song that stands out as the masterpiece on this creative album. Canned Wheat introduced several of the bands most remembered songs and still sounds incredibly fresh, a product from the days of Classic Rock. Recorded in the aftermath of Randy Bachman's departure, Share The Land was a better album than anyone expected. It was the biggest selling original album in their career. Burton Cummings is in excellent voice and the new double lead guitar team of Kurt Winter and Greg Leskiw gave the band a greater range than they had before.

Pop / Pop Rock

The Bee Gees' third album is something of a departure, with more of a rocking sound and with the orchestra (apart from a few well-placed harp arpeggios) somewhat less prominent in the sound mix than on their first two LPs. The two hits, "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" and "I Started a Joke," are very much of a piece with their earlier work, but on "Kitty Can," "Indian Gin and Whisky Dry," and "Such a Shame" (the latter written by the group's then lead guitarist, Vince Melouney), among other cuts, they sound much more like a working band with a cohesive group sound, rather than a harmony vocal group with accompaniment…

The first Soft Machine LP usually got the attention, with its movable parts sleeve, as well as the presence of ultra-talented songwriter Kevin Ayers. But musically, Volume Two better conveys the Dada-ist whimsy and powerful avant rock leanings of the band. Hugh Hopper took over for Ayers on bass, and his fuzz tones and experimental leanings supplanted Ayers' pop emphasis. The creative nucleus behind this most progressive of progressive rock albums, however, is Robert Wyatt. He provides the musical arrangements to Hopper's quirky ideas on the stream-of-consciousness collection of tunes ("Rivmic Melodies") on side one…

1969 is a sonically bracing, lyrically incisive record drawing startling parallels between it's titular year - the year when the utopian ideals of the '60s came face to face with harsh reality - and today. The result is a deeply compelling musical statement; the work of a passionate idealist confronting the brutal disappointments of the real world. This album is a landmark in a long and colorful career of creative pursuits, from Cymone's early collaborations with Prince through his solo successes in the '80s and his work as a hitmaker for notable pop and R&B acts. In 2014, Cymone ended a self-imposed 27 year hiatus with The Stone, a remarkable self-reinvention that saw the artist emerge with some of the most accomplished and personal music he's ever made. With 1969, Cymone returns to craft songs insightfully addressing issues of racial and economic inequality.

Genre: Folk-Rock, Progressive Folk | Label: Nixed Records

A major find for Fairport fanatics, this collects 23 unreleased performances from the late '60s in acceptable-to-excellent fidelity, mostly from the BBC (with a few tracks from TV clips, and one 1968 studio outtake). Running 77 minutes, it's divided roughly equally between the Judy Dyble and the Sandy Denny eras. Only one of these songs ("Reno, Nevada") shows up on the official comp of early Fairport BBC cuts, Heyday. And even then, this is a much different version than the Heyday take of "Reno, Nevada," running seven minutes and featuring some dazzling psychedelic guitar riffs.
