It's hard to overestimate the impact Stevie Ray Vaughan's debut, Texas Flood, had upon its release in 1983. At that point, blues was no longer hip, the way it was in the '60s. Texas Flood changed all that, climbing into the Top 40 and spending over half a year on the charts, which was practically unheard of for a blues recording. Vaughan became a genuine star and, in doing so, sparked a revitalization of the blues. This was a monumental impact, but his critics claimed that, no matter how prodigious Vaughan's instrumental talents were, he didn't forge a distinctive voice; instead, he wore his influences on his sleeve, whether it was Albert King's pinched yet muscular soloing or Larry Davis' emotive singing. There's a certain element of truth in that, but that was sort of the point of Texas Flood.

One of the death metal genre's seminal cornerstones, Autopsy's debut album, Severed Survival, arrived in 1989, following two widely traded cassette demos and drummer Chris Reifert's brief association with Chuck Schuldiner's Death, prior to relocating from Florida to San Francisco. Once based there, Reifert completed his new band was with guitarists Eric Cutler and Danny Coralles, plus fretless bassist extraordinaire Steve DiGiorgio, who had just recently launched his "four-string gun for hire" career with neighboring headbangers Sadus.

The last years have been pretty exciting for The Twins fans: 2 recommended compilations were released ('12 Inch Classics' and 'Singles Collection') both enhanced with rare mixes and b-sides, as well as a massive clip compilation on DVD. Celebration time doesn't end here, as their 1993 'The Impossible Dream' has been out of print for quite a while now, so it's time for a new edition rerelease of the album.

It would be nice to say that Ray Brown's final recording session before his sudden and untimely death in the summer of 2002 resulted in a masterpiece, but although this trio session with guitarist Russell Malone and pianist Monty Alexander is perfectly serviceable, a masterpiece it is not. It's a very attractive album – Brown was probably not capable of producing anything less as a leader – but it suffers just a bit from Alexander's slightly sugary style and from the lack of a drummer.
