Though they have both passed on, their highly influential recordings are still enjoyed by fans and studied carefully by aspiring acoustic guitarists and folk singers. Doc in particular is considered to be one of the most important flatpick guitarists of the 20th century, and his fingerstyle playing is also highly regarded. His son, Merle, who excelled at guitar and banjo, had served for many years as his father’s accompanist.

While father/son duo Doc & Merle Watson reached their commercial peak in the 1970s, live recordings from this time are rare, and the performances in this collection have not been heard since the nights they were played more than four decades ago.

Written at a time when the composer was struggling to accept his growing deafness, the three sonatas on this volume were published together in 1803 as his Opus 30 and provide a remarkable trilogy - a collection of incredible variety and sophistication.

From 1974 through 1980, Johnny "Guitar" Watson was on a tear no one, including George Clinton or Bootsy Collins, could equal. While the P-Funk machine began to run out of steam by 1978 - with the exception of the Brides of Funkenstein - Watson kept churning out the weird, kinky funk well into the era of Rick James. Love Jones, his last fine record for quite awhile, had all the trademarks in place: the choppy, heavily reverbed and wah-wahed guitar that had made Watson a blues sensation, the sci-fi keyboards, the handclap that Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards ripped off for Chic, the expandable horn section that intertwined with the guitar riffs, and the punched up basic basslines that kept the funk a simple but ultimately moving thing.

Much like his breakthrough record, 2015’s No. 1 hit The Underdog, Watson promises a collection of music focused around life, love and family. New tracks include “Mariano’s Dream,” nostalgic ode “They Don’t Make ‘Em Like They Used To” and “Diamonds & Daughters,” a sweet tribute to his own daughter.

Jazz great Bobby Watson celebrates some of the vital but less well-known contributions of African-Americans on Made in America, his first recording on Smoke Sessions Records. Saxophonist and composer Watson does his part to call attention to black pioneers in a variety of fields, from politics to pop culture, science to sports. These compositions are inspired by a few names that should be familiar to jazz fans&emdash; Sammy Davis, Jr., and Grant Green&emdash; but also by more obscure historic figures such as Wendell Pruitt, Butterfly McQueen, Major Taylor, Madam C.J. Walker, Isaac Murphy, Bass Reeves, and Dr. Mark Dean. Watson explains, “This project has been a history lesson for me and I hope it will be a history lesson for the listeners.”
