You raced home from the day gig, threw the button-down in the hamper, pulled on your favorite Stones tee, kissed the wife and kids — you’re out the door ‘cause it’s jam night down at the Big Al’s! The Strat is freshly strung and you’ve worked all week on the tunes they usually call out and so maybe, just maybe this will be the night that you actually bring the guitar in and sign up on the sheet.

Andy's 1997 follow-up to the popular Ear X-tacy CD features more classic instrumental songs in addition to Andy's vocal debut on 6 tracks. The powerful Night to Remember, heavy-grinding Wishing Well, and the neo-classical classic Groove or Die only begin to shed light on Andy's wide-ranging musical agenda. This CD highlights a natural evolution in Andy's writing and arranging.

Research and surveys say that glossophobia, more commonly known as the fear of public speaking, ranks as the #1 phobia ahead of death, spiders, heights and dozens of other common fears. The researchers obviously haven’t polled a lot of musicians because nothing strikes fear in the heart of a practicing guitar player more than jumping up on the stage and performing at their local blues jam.

Although the vocal trio Andy Bey & the Bey Sisters lasted 11 years, it wasn't as well documented as it should have been. The trio, which consisted of Andy Bey and his sisters Geraldine and Salome, was formed in 1956 and broke up in 1967 – and during that 11-year period, they only recorded three albums. The first was provided for RCA Victor in 1961, and the other two, Now! Hear! and 'Round Midnight, were recorded for Prestige in 1964 and 1965, respectively. In late 2000, those two Prestige dates were reissued on this excellent CD.

Jazz / Post Bop / Modern Jazz / Avant-Garde Jazz / Baritone Saxophone

The quintet on this CD (baritonist Hamiet Bluiett, pianist Don Pullen, bassist Fred Hopkins, drummer Idris Muhammad, and Chief Bay on African percussion) was only together for a week, but three CDs resulted from their engagement at the Carlos I club in New York; Mulgrew Miller is in Pullen's place on one of the two other discs. This is a particularly intriguing setting for the great baritonist Bluiett, for even though he is an avant-gardist, he is heard here playing such numbers as "I'll Close My Eyes" (which becomes so romantic at one point that it seems satirical), "Autumn Leaves," and Bluiett's blues "John."
