The final Atomic Rooster album, from 1980, caught the group riding the crest of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and loving every minute of it. Reconstituted around founders Vincent Crane and John Du Cann, plus drummer Preston Heyman, the group signed with EMI and set about cutting an album that – if it wasn't exactly a match for the peerless pair that launched Atomic Rooster's career a decade previously, was at least the best thing they'd done since then. Settling firmly into the same darkened groove that created "Devil's Answer" and "Death Walks Behind You," ten new numbers gave hearty evidence that time had not diminished the sheer malevolent power of their combined vision.

Recorded, as the title makes plain, at London's Marquee club in 1980, this is an uncompromising portrait of Atomic Rooster at their comeback peak. With the core duo of John du Cann and Vincent Crane recently reunited with classic-era drummer Paul Hammond, this scintillating recording captures the band bathing in the respect and adoration of an entire new generation of fans, the denizens of the so-called New Wave Of British Heavy Metal that grew up alongside, then exploded ahead of, the punk mainstream of the late 1970s.

Whilst being a very good compilation for fans of the band, it includes several unlicensed tracks whose copyright is owned variously by Elektra, EMI, Sanctuary (who purchased the B&C and Dawn) catalogues and Polydor Records. While it is 'endorsed' by former band member John Du Cann, he does not actually own the rights to the 'Atomic Rooster' name; this resides with the estate of late founder member Vincent Crane. Excellent addition to any prog rock music collection
A legendary Heavy-Prog album if there ever was one. And a trio at that. These guys look so cool in the liner notes. Man you get Crane and Cann together and look out it’s time to cook !
“Death Walks Behind You” opens with haunting piano lines before the guitar starts to make some noise. Full sound a minute in, vocals follow. A calm with piano after 3 1/2 minutes. It kicks back in. “Vug” opens with some very impressive organ by Crane as the guitar supports. Lots of organ 2 minutes in. The guitar is more prominant after 3 minutes. They’re cooking now ! “Tomorrow Night” is a somewhat catchy tune. Nice organ solo 2 minutes in.Tasteful guitar a minute later. It ends on an experimental note. “7 Streets” opens with organ. Crane used a device to make his Hammond organ sound like church organ on this one. The drumming is excellent on this track but then so is the whole song. This along with “Nobody Else” are my favourites. Some ripping organ and guitar after 3 minutes as they trade solos. I wish all the songs were this dynamic.

Coming out of the ashes of the Crazy World of Arthur Browne, Atomic Rooster always had the reputation of being an early progressive rock band. In many ways, they do not really fit into that progressive rock label, coming across as a lot more straightforward and less adventurous than many of that ilk. However, they really did present a very unique sound that seemed to build on the strangeness of Brown's outfit while infusing it with a more serious tone. This compilation includes quite a few killer cuts from the group's career. Seeming to be a good introduction to the sound of this outfit.
