Jazz / New Orleans / Experimental Pop / Experimental Traditional Jazz

An eclectic, or probably more appropriately, multifaceted album by one of the great sound magicians of New Orleans. The tunes range from ancient spirituals through a dirge, an obscure beguine (correctly named as Touloulou) or Ellington numbers to a Tom Waits song, but any of them sounds timeless in the usual intense presentation of Ms. Nealand and her Royal Roses. Indeed, the work is the current response of the band to the question of why this kind of seemingly outdated music should matter today. Their approach integrates the musical explorations of the last several decades, involving results from jazz, rock and even classical experience. And the outcome is truly spectacular.

It odd to hear master pianist/bandleader Duke Ellington jump for Joy as a dirge. On Comeback Children first cut, it sounds rather like solemn jazz funeral procession moving down the street. The song is totally transformed by saxophonist/clarinetist/vocalist Aurora Nealand and the Royal Roses. Its just one way that the eclectic leader mixes things up on the album. She also employs various musicians for different cuts and continuously roams around genres. The mood is much more rousing on Ellingto old Man Blues,?one of several numbers that has Nealand swinging on clarinet with some fine guitar by Matt Bell. Trumpeter David Boswell jumps into the foray for a rousing good time.

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, Paul Lamb and the King Snakes" the announcer introduces the band for an evening of traditional and rocking blues. More than that this is a simply outstanding concert recorded live at one of the truly iconic venues, and Paul and his band serve up as good a set of blues as you will ever hear. Their last album was a set of late night blues "After Hours", well received it was as well, but here in a large venue the full King Snakes show is to be heard, over eleven songs five of which are self written, the others some very well chosen covers that suit the band perfectly.

As good as they are on their records, the Dubliners are essentially performance artists who are at their best in front of an audience – in this case an extraordinarily large one, doing most of their best-known songs (many of which remain identified with them 40 years later). The sound is surprisingly good, and the spirits are overflowing, and the entire record makes a fine follow-up/companion to the mid-'60s In Concert album and the live Finnegan Wakes. It's the tracks off of this album, as much as the studio originals, that have filled up many a compilation on the Dubliners in the decades since.

Ten of Collins' soft-rock hits (including "In the Air Tonight," "One More Night," and the cover of "Groovy Kind of Love") are given a smooth, friendly easy-listening treatment on this disc; the only drawback are the oppressive synthesized drums, which give the entire recording a mechanical feel.
