"Our national obsession with the weather should really be an obsession with the jet stream." So argues this brilliantly informative documentary as it explains the workings of the high-altitude ribbon of air that blows around the northern hemisphere at hurricane speeds. First observed by US bomber pilots in the Second World War, "the jet" is the engine of the atmosphere: it makes flights from America to Europe quicker (if pilots latch onto it, they can get a 200mph tailwind), but it also cranks up our weather events - last year's floods were partly caused by "an extremely sluggish jet".

For most British people, the First World War was the Western Front, the trench line stretching from the Swiss Frontier to the North Sea. It was there that the majority of nearly nine million British and Dominion soldiers who enlisted during the war served, and where most of the 947,000 who were killed met their deaths. This detailed series covers everything from how the front was created and the experiences of the British Army in France, how the First World War was fought in trenches, forts and bunkers to the battle of Verdun and the last hundred days of the war.

It is the site of the largest mass murder in the history of the world - Auschwitz. Yet few know the true and surprising history of this most infamous place, nor how it fitted into the Nazis' overall plan for the mass extermination of the Jews - what they called the 'Final Solution'. For Auschwitz, via its destructive dynamism, became both a microcosm of the Nazi State and the logical consequence of Hitler's warped worldview.
