Bobby G. lives life on the edge in this real, raw New York street drama. Bobby is a small-time coke dealer, always on the hustle but rarely successful. He lives in Hell's Kitchen with his Puerto Rican girlfriend Lucy, who makes ends meet as a prostitute. A typical day finds Bobby selling $20 bags to neighborhood locals and passing cars. A yuppie kid looking to score a kilo of coke approaches him to broker a deal and Bobby sees the opportunity of a lifetime to make some real money. His rough days may just be over. With the tidy profit he could even leave the business. Playing out of his league, Bobby arranges to get the kilo from Astro, a fearsome, high-level drug dealer. Though Lucy announces that she's decided to go back to Puerto Rico and pleads with him to make a fresh start too, Bobby is sticking to his deal and isn't going anywhere now, convinced he'll be 'livin' large in a matter a' days…

This CD is the brainchild of John Henry, blues enthusiast, promoter and businessman from Waterville, OH (near Toledo). Henry has been an instrumental figure in the blues scene in Ohio for decades. One of the best blues venues in the Toledo area is Henry’s shop, Third Street Cigar, in downtown Waterville. This intimate setting hosts national touring acts, as well as local bands, on a regular basis. Henry founded his record company Third Street Cigar Records in 2017 . Henry recognized Bobby G’s talent and enthusiasm and enlisted his long time friend, Johnny Rawls, to produce this CD for Bobby G on the Third Street Cigar Records label.

Label: Bobby G | Tracks: 13 | Rls.date: 2016

Bobby G and I had a chance to work some blues gigs in Toledo, OH. We became friends and I asked him if he had any albums out and he said "No". We changed that and proceeded to produce this album during the last 18 months. Bobby purchased a hand held recorder to record his ideas and I (Mike Lorenz) wrote melodies and arranged the rhythm tracks. Eric Brasier also added five songs that show his lyric writing skills. Eric also played guitar on several of his tunes. A special thanks to Greg Moore and Pat McDonagh for their guitar work and contribution to the album.

Rocket is Alex G’s 8th full-length—an assured statement that follows a slate of humble masterpieces, stretching to his 2015 Domino debut, Beach Music. Amid recording, Alex made headlines for catching the attention of Frank Ocean; playing guitar on his two 2016 albums, Endless and Blonde. More than stylistic cues, what Alex took from the experience was a confidence in collaboration. Rocket wears this collaborative spirit proudly, and in its numerous contributors presents a restless sense of musical experimentation, effortlessly jumping from sound collage to dreamy folk to bouncing Americana.

A nice record from Bobby – quite different from his 60s sides for Duke/Peacock, and recorded in California (as you might guess from the title!) with a smoother more soulful approach. The style works well for Bobby – and kind of gave him a new lease on life during the 70s, as he mixed his rougher bluesy vocals with some hipper arrangements – still quite deep in soul, but with a compressed sound that creates a new mode of expression.

Every era needs its crooner, and in the early '60s, it was Bobby Vinton. Vinton's sentimental balladeering and orchestral, middle-of-the-road arrangements were a throwback to a decade earlier, before rock & roll had found its mass market. If Vinton is sometimes identified with a rock & roll audience, it's only because his music was bought by young listeners for a time, and because he still catches some airplay on oldies stations. What he sang was vocal pop, landing some of the biggest hits of the early '60s with "Roses Are Red (My Love)," "Blue on Blue," "There! I've Said It Again," "Mr. Lonely," and "Blue Velvet," the last of which has become his signature song in the wake of its notorious prominence in David Lynch's Blue Velvet.

Saxophonist and composer Watson does his part to call attention to black pioneers in a variety of fields, from politics to pop culture, science to sports. These compositions are inspired by a few names that should be familiar to jazz fans&emdash; Sammy Davis, Jr., and Grant Green&emdash; but also by more obscure historic figures such as Wendell Pruitt, Butterfly McQueen, Major Taylor, Madam C.J. Walker, Isaac Murphy, Bass Reeves, and Dr. Mark Dean. Watson explains, “This project has been a history lesson for me and I hope it will be a history lesson for the listeners.”

Chuck Prophet describes his new disc Bobby Fuller Died For Your Sins as California noir. The state has always represented the Golden Dream, and it's the tension between romance and reality that lurks underneath the surface in all noir films and paperbacks, and that connects these songs. Doomed love, inconsolable loneliness, rags to riches to rags again, and fast-paced violence are always on the menu on the Left Coast. Featuring "A Bad Year For Rock And Roll," an ode to all of the great artists we lost in 2016 and a bunch of other Chuck Prophet (soon to be) classics.

Genre: Jazz, Smooth Jazz | Label: Sin-Drome Records | Catalog Number: SD 8925

It's a tribute to Bobby Caldwell's consummate songwriting skills that his three original compositions – including the previously recorded, melancholy would-be classic "Stuck on You" – fit in perfectly alongside standards by the likes of Cole Porter and Sammy Cahn/Jimmy Van Heusen on the very tradition-minded Blue Condition. Best known for easygoing R&B-flavored adult pop vocals, Caldwell reaches back and superimposes himself in front of lively big-band arrangements that recall classic Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Bobby Darin recordings. He never approaches those idols in terms of vocal distinction, but that doesn't seem to be his point. He's more reflecting upon his inspirations than trying to emulate them, rewarding longtime fans with the sort of artistry they suspected might exist all along. The uninitiated, however, might enjoy all the surrounding pleasantries and wonder why we need another guy out there doing classics when he clearly doesn't measure up to those standards vocally.
