Javier Vargas and the Vargas Blues Band return with a new project: Cambalache & Bronca (2017 KZoo Music). Recorded in Spanish, it includes legendary songs by Argentinian artists and a song he wrote with his dear friend Manolo Tena when they recorded the album Spanish Blood together: “No Te Rindas”, which will also be one of the singles of the album. This song also features singer and guitarist José Rulo (voice in “No te rindas” and “Sucio y desprolijo”), who will also take part of the tour along with other reputed musicians and members of the band: Luis Mayo (voice and bass), Juan Carlos Mendoza (bass), Miguel Angel Cap (drums), Oscar Quesada (drums), Jota Marsán (drums), Gustavo Segura (drums), Peter Kunst (drums). The album also features Litto Nebbia (voice in the “Viento dile a la lluvia”).

Heavy on the kind of blues-rock favored by Humble Pie, this is a live outing in front of a too-loud New York audience. Sax player Colin Cooper helps to separate these English midland lads from the heads-down no-nonsense boogie competition, although the emphasis is squarely on guitarist Peter Haycock. His solo electric slide showcase "Country Hat" is a marvel. The band's pop leanings featured so strongly on their studio recordings come through in "I Am Constant." It's a solid outing, and much meatier than subsequent offerings. -Mark Allan

The tune "East-West" from the second Paul Butterfield Blues Band album of the same name made music history. It is arguably the first extended rock solo, a fusing of blues-rock with Eastern scales and tone. Here is the root of psychedelic acid rock.

Dutchman's gravel voice is the dominant presence on these original songs from four consummate blues musicians. The first thing that hits you when you listen to this band is The Dutchman’s voice. Any description would have to include the word gravel. He also plays harmonica but the next thing that will jump out at you is the lead guitar work. Locals are still perplexed as to why a blues performer putting together a blues band would turn to an international punk-rocker famous for lighting guitars on fire to work with. Matt Roman still brings the heat with his own unique style. The result is a symbiotic team that is both energetic and entertaining…

The Blues Band's new album "Few Short Lines" has been a number of years in the making, whilst they have been skillfully tweaking it to perfection. I haven't stopped listening to it since I bought it, at their recent Winchester gig and I've come to the conclusion that it is an absolute masterpiece!

Original, mellow, highly listenable, thoughtful lyrics, strange title! Not quite what we've come to expect from the Blues band, and indeed if you want a good boogie then buy their 'Live' album instead.

Thanks to the dedicated effort of the folks at Real Gone, this often bootlegged date by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band gets its first official release. These 13 tracks come from a smoking date at the Unicorn Coffee House in Boston. Nobody's sure of the exact date, but estimates put it somewhere during a two-week run in May, two months before the band's classic East-West was released. There's over an hour of music on what amounts to the first recorded document from this sextet: hard-grooving Chicago drummer Billy Davenport (Sam Lay left after the band's debut album) joined vocalist/harmonicist Butterfield, guitarists Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop, organist Mark Naftalin, and bassist Jerome Arnold.
