Il se nomme Jean-Paul Valley. Il étudiait à Gotham lorsque son père ensanglanté est venu mourir chez lui. Il a survécu le temps de lui laisser quelques consignes. C’est ainsi que le jeune Valley a pris contact avec l’ordre de Saint-Dumas. Au sein de cette société secrète remontant aux Croisades le père de Jean-Paul Valley était l’exécuteur. Revêtu du costume d’Azrael il exerçait la fonction d’ange exterminateur. Ce rôle de bourreau était tenu depuis plus de vingt générations par les Valley. Aujourd’hui le fils doit succéder au père. Grace à un entraînement sous hypnose il peut devenir "l’instrument de la juste cruauté !" Pendant ce temps Batman s’interroge sur l’identité de cet homme vétu comme un ange qui serait tombé d’un immeuble appartenant à Lehtah industriel et trafiquant d’armes high-tech…

Souriez !, ou Rire et mourir (Batman: The Killing Joke), est un comics one shot écrit par Alan Moore et dessiné par Brian Bolland. Cette aventure de Batman a été publiée par DC Comics en 1988 et traduite en France l’année suivante.
L'histoire tourne autour du combat psychologique entre Batman et son ennemi le Joker. Celui-ci s'est échappé de l'asile d'Arkham et planifie de rendre le commissaire Gordon fou. Tout cela pour prouver que le citoyen parfait peut devenir fou après avoir eu une très mauvaise journée.
