Alternate Rarities 1-4 are a series of individual bootleg CD's by The Beatles. Originally released by Birthday Records, the credits on the cover state this is an "improved" version of the discs made by Blackhead Walrus in 2003. The rarities in this collection include songs where the versions were mixed or edited differently in other countries, a few of them significantly. It used to be where the only way you would be able to hear them is if you bought them individually via import. Most of them are transferred from vinyl but some may also come from reel-to-reel tape, cassette, or even 8-track for certain versions.

Unlike its companion, Complete Rarities: IRS 1982-1987, the music collected on the 2016 digital-only Complete Warner Bros. Rarities 1988-2011 hasn't been anthologized often. Bits and pieces have been rounded up in singles boxes, and there was a "Rarities and B-sides" bonus disc added to the 2003 compilation In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003, but there was no Warner-era equivalent of Dead Letter Office, and the expanded editions of the albums often skimped on bonus tracks.

Al Petteway continues his excellent lesson with five beautiful and evocative guitar instrumentals in the Celtic style. This time, he covers songs and effects that can be attained through a variety of tunings, including standard, dropped-D, open G and low C. Al shows you how to create your own arrangements by finding the melody within the chord structure, then fleshing it out with pipe-like drone notes, chord substitutions, moving bass lines, the rhythmic "Scottish Snap" and other Celtic-sounding elements. Embellishment techniques_right hand rolls, hammers, pull-offs, etc._help you turn basic tunes into elegant guitar pieces.

As the story goes, Sessions was to be an album released by EMI Records in 1985 featuring previously unreleased recording sessions by The Beatles. The success of the Rarities compilations in both the UK and US proved to Apple/EMI that there was a demand for something different and unfamiliar. While other recordings had surfaced in bootleg form, this would have been a first but the surviving Beatles rejected the concept. They would approve of alternate takes and outtakes released ten years later, but not before the bootleggers got their first with the release of the Ultra Rare Trax series on The Swingin' Pig. Sessions represents the album that was to be but wasn't. This version also features a different take of "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Di", but does not feature the two bonus tracks commonly found on another version of Sessions. The mixes here would be tinkered with when they were used/utilized for the official Anthology series.

Released in 1994, “Artifacts II” is the sequel to the ground-breaking Beatles rarities compilation issued the previous year by Italian bootleggers. Like its predecessor, “Artifacts II” is a sweeping 5-CD compilation of newly unearthed Beatles rarities presented in chronological order. It features outtakes, live concert tracks, demos, overdub sessions, and rehearsals covering the group's known recordings from 1960 through 1969 – it's essentially a best-of the rest of the Beatles' unauthorized output, from what were then the best-known sources of every track represented. The "Artifacts" box sets were clearly the prototype for the authorized collection of Beatles outtakes (“The Beatles Anthology”) issued by EMI in 1995. The official Beatles vault releases have made much of what is found on the “Artifacts” boxes obsolete, however, there are some tracks found on the bootleg box sets that don’t appear on “Anthology,” making it a worthwhile addition to any Beatles collection. This is the second 5 CD box set in the series.

Released in 1993, “Artifacts” is an epic 5-CD compilation of newly unearthed Beatles rarities presented in chronological order. 124 choice outtakes, live concert tracks, demos, overdub sessions, and rehearsals covering the group's known recordings from 1958 through 1970 – it's essentially a best-of the Beatles' unauthorized output, from what were then the best-known sources of every track represented. The box also comes with a fully illustrated and annotated 24-page booklet providing information (where known) about each song and each performance. It was unlike any bootleg presentation seen before it. "Artifacts" and its sequel (another 5 CDs worth of material released in 1994) were clearly the prototype for the authorized collection of Beatles outtakes (“The Beatles Anthology”) issued by EMI in 1995. The official Beatles vault releases have made much of what is found on the “Artifacts” boxes obsolete, however, there are some tracks found on the bootleg box sets that don’t appear on “Anthology,” making it a worthwhile addition to any Beatles collection. This is the first 5 CD box set in the series with complete booklet and packaging scans at 600 d.p.i.
