2 Billion Beats are Manchester based DJs and producers Tom Lonsborough and Col Hamilton. They have come up through the rainy city's thriving club scene after being inspired by acts such as Groove Armada, Basement Jaxx, Chemical Brothers and Crazy P. They wanted to carry on that legacy of taking electronic beats live to smash up dance floors, mosh pits and festivals. Oh boy have they succeeded!

Before setting global music charts afire with his Fatboy Slim alias, Norman Cook was merging his love of '70s funk breaks with classic Jamaican dub sound system rhythms. Shortly following his stint with UK indie popsters the Housemartins, Cook founded Beats International as a creative outlet for his growing interest in dance music. Using studio musicians, rappers, vintage vinyl recordings, and samples, he fashioned clever, catchy pop tunes that were to become the basis for the genre now known as "funky breaks."

Synth Pop / Electronic / Electroclash / Neo-Electro

After spending years away from music to renovate buildings and make films and visual artwork, Adult.'s Adam Miller and Nicola Kuperus couldn't have picked a better time to return. During the years between 2007's Why Bother? and 2013's The Way Things Fall, the kind of dark, spiky, synth-driven sound they'd been honing since the early 2000s – back when it was called electroclash – finally rose to prominence, making them seem less like outliers and more like trailblazers. That distinction seems even more fitting considering that Adult. have moved on from the wild-eyed noise-punk of their previous album on The Way Things Fall, which wears its accessibility as boldly as the duo took no prisoners before.

Seen (2001). The chief perpetrator of the International Observer experience is keyboardist, songwriter and producer Tom Bailey. Following the extraordinary success of his post-punk synth-pop group The Thompson Twins, production and writing work for the likes of Deborah Harry, and the ambient techno of his Babble project, Tom Bailey was lured to the exotic climes of Aotearoa/New Zealand. Seen is the debut album from International Observer…

In its first and second incarnations (1992-1998 and 2003-2006) the UK label Emit Records left us a legacy of around two dozen albums. Many of them are among the most striking, beautiful and forward ambient music of our times, including two albums by the duo of Ric Peet and Martyn Watson. The first album sounds like the aural equivalent of Alice In Wonderland for grown-ups, a paisley-coloured playground anchored here and there by techy pulses and dubby beats. The composers have created a surreal, kaleidoscopic wonder that blends samples and original melodies with a sense of fun and playfulness that sets it apart from a lot of other serious electronica…

Many of them are among the most striking, beautiful and forward ambient music of our times, including this album by the duo of Ric Peet and Martyn Watson. Action Painting is a wondrous thing, perhaps a tad less surreal and more direct than its predecessor but on close inspection no less playful or inventive. Some of the beats are more rocking, with "That Time Already" and "Mornin" being virtual rock jams were it not for the added strings, backward effects and zany looped sounds…

Primal Scream always refracted the past through the prism of the present, turning hero worship into something resembling high art. It wasn't always this way, not at the start, when they were part of the delicate, brittle C86 scene, nor was it true when they exploded in a brilliant blast of acid house on Screamadelica. The art came later, after they halted their ascendency via the Stones-aping Give Out But Don't Give Up, a move that in retrospect seems to be an important final foundation within the construction of Primal Scream but at the time seemed odd, halting, flying in the face of Cool Britannia.
