Giuseppe Sinopoli projects Liszt’s “Mephistopheles” with such unrelenting urgency that he could as well be fighting the devil in person. True, the recorded balance keeps the strings fairly close at hand (the actual sound image is not dissimilar to EMI’s on their Masur/Leipzig Liszt series), but the playing itself has real drive and panache, frequently throwing caution to the winds in pursuit of maximum spontaneity (as regards tempo, Sinopoli beats Bernstein to the finishing post by no less than ten minutes).

It's great to see this music being played with such conviction. We all know that Alsop is a superb Bernstein conductor, and Naxos already has a terrific account of the First Symphony from James Judd and the New Zealand Symphony, but this newcomer is, if anything, even finer certainly sonically and conducted with even more pizzazz. In the central Profanation movement, Alsop really does outdo Bernstein himself; the playing of the Baltimore Symphony here is sensational, and in the finale Jennifer Johnson Cano sings with great sensitivity and a beautiful tone.

Rudolf Serkin's 1964 recording of Beethoven's Piano Concerto in C minor is surely among the greatest recordings of the work ever made, and certainly his finest performance of the work. The energy and enthusiasm and even passion he brings to Concerto in C minor is overwhelming, and indeed, it overwhelms Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic, who accompany Serkin with the sort of commitment that only a conductor and orchestra give to soloists when they are deeply inspired. But while Serkin's 1962 recording of Beethoven's Piano Concerto in E flat major is also surely among the greatest recordings of the work ever made, it is not quite Serkin's finest recording of the work.

Nominated 'Rising Star' in the 63rd Annual DownBeat critics poll, this is a spectacular debut of the New York's violinist Sarah Bernstein on Leo Records. The CD features the acclaimed violinist with master musicians Kris Davis on piano, Stuart Popejoy on electric bass and Ches Smith on drums. The album showcases Bernstein's distinctive post-tonal and polyrhythmic jazz compositions deconstructed by open improvisation and sonic exploration. The music is developing through seven pieces which flow organically from minimal music to breathtaking be-bop to free jazz.

An all-too-rare new recording from Polyphony and Stephen Layton presents highlights from the choral repertoire by four twentieth-century American giants: Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland and Randall Thompson. Framed by Thompson’s understated favourites Alleluia and Fare Well, the programme includes Bernstein’s Missa brevis, Copland’s early set of four motets, and—of course—Barber’s inimitable Agnus Dei.
