Verve 60th Anniversary Rare Albums SHM-CD Reissue Series. Reissue with SHM-CD format. Two different sides of Verve Records in the 50s – one modern, one a bit more traditional – and both represented in live material from the Newport Jazz Festival in 1957! Side one features a stunning live performance from pianist Teddy Wilson – working in a tight trio with Milt Hinton on bass and Spec Powell on drums – and really blowing away any conceptions we might have had about Wilson being aging or flowery at the time. Instead, he's got a sharp edge and command of the keys that's amazing – and which almost seems to have a bit more bite than usual in this concert setting.

Label: William Heller | Rel:2014

Perhaps best known as keyboard player with smooth jazz super-group (the) Rippingtons, Bill Heller has released his own solo collection, the excellent ‘Find The Way’. It fuses together jazz of varying complexions through the combined talents of guest performers (and Rippingtons band-mates) Jeff Kashiwa, Rico Belled and Dave Karasony plus fine work from Eric Marienthal Ronnie Gutierrez, Joel Rosenblatt and Dave Anderson. However, that said, this is very much Heller’s album.

The story behind this duo setting by legendary drummer Andrew Cyrille and venerable tenor saxophonist Bill McHenry was initiated by Max Koslow who routinely attends New York City's fabled Village Vanguard venue on Thursday evenings. After hearing the twosome perform, he proposed they record a set in the studio for his nascent Brain Schism Productions. Indeed, the artists' synergy comes into full swing from the onset for a production that clocks in at 38-minutes.

French bass clarinetist Thomas Savy might mistakenly be seen as someone who takes classical music to heart with the concept of a full-blown suite, but be assured he's most interested in neo-bop and modern jazz. With bassist Scott Colley and drummer Bill Stewart, Savy plays a resonant and resounding brand of music, where each section of his suite can easily stand alone, and is coordinated with the other parts. In softer or harder tones, the music is always swinging, as Savy plays simple, rich, and effective melody lines, rarely if ever crossing over into overblown harmonics.

William John Evans, known as Bill Evans (pronunciation: /ˈɛvəns/, August 16, 1929 – September 15, 1980), was an American jazz pianist and composer who mostly worked in a trio setting. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, and is considered by some to have been the most influential post-World War II jazz pianist. Evans's use of impressionist harmony, inventive interpretation of traditional jazz repertoire, block chords, and trademark rhythmically independent, "singing" melodic lines continue to influence jazz pianists today. Unlike many other jazz musicians of his time, Evans never embraced new movements like jazz fusion or free jazz.

This well-rendered, joyfully rocking, jazzy and coolly swinging – not to mention crazy and from the outer limits – live date (recorded at N.Y.C.'s Iridium Jazz Club in 2004) serves as a celebration of the marriage of both idioms, as well as a 20th anniversary party for the legendary Yes and King Crimson drummer's famed Earthworks band. The expanded orchestra concept began as a joint-force venture between the Earthworks repertoire and woodwind player Tim Garland's London-based, nine-piece Underground Orchestra.
