You're nursing your brew at the local blues jam waiting on your turn. You've got a solid six or so blues grooves under your belt but darn, someone already called the Stormy blues and that SRV jam. Next guy called the minor blues ala B.B. and then, as luck would have it, the Chicago shuffle groove in the same key you do it in. Fingers are crossed but of course cat number three calls both your slow blues and that uptempo straight-ahead thing you feel solid on.

Beginning to build a repertoire of songs that you can play comfortably is the first important step in getting started in the Country Blues. But once you've got that repertoire-building process started, it can be enormously helpful to become acquainted with the Blues in a more general, less song-specific way, learning the various stylistic pathways that enable experienced blues players who have never met or played together before to sit down and make music together. When you see that happen, it seems like magic, but it's really just a matter of their knowing and understanding the language of the blues.

The city of St. Louis played host, in the 1920s and 1930s, to one of the most distinctive and vital blues scenes ever documented on record. Like Memphis and Atlanta, St. Louis served as a sort of magnet, attracting musicians from the surrounding hinterlands and providing performance opportunities that were not available out in the country. Many of the St. Louis musicians were transplanted Mississippians, like Charley Jordan, while others, like Clifford Gibson and Teddy Darby, originally hailed from Kentucky. The various early influences that the music of these players displayed ended up coalescing into something that might be called the “St. Louis sound”.
