One of the biggest pop stars of the early '60s, Brenda Lee hasn't attracted as much critical respect as she deserves. She is sometimes inaccurately characterized as one of the few female teen idols. More crucially, the credit for achieving success with pop-country crossovers usually goes to Patsy Cline, although Lee's efforts in this era were arguably of equal importance. While she made few recordings of note after the mid-'60s, the best of her first decade is fine indeed, encompassing not just the pop ballads that were her biggest hits, but straight country and some surprisingly fierce rockabilly.

Classic Rock, we find big names like Queen, Elvis Presley, Santana, Rod Stewart or Lou Reed, who live with other songs that have gone beyond their own interpreters. It is true anthems, thanks to soundtracks or advertisements, have reached many generations. This is the case of My Sharona, Heat of the Moment and You Never Can Tell, Chuck Berry. Golden Hits have grouped all those songs that already have the status of immortals, such that, despite the passage of time, still excited and enjoying it like the first day. Timeless pieces like Unchained Melody, When a Man Loves a Woman or What a Wonderful World, share "rows" with legends such as Aretha Franklin, The Beach Boys, Otis Redding, and the voices disappeared recently Etta James and Scott McKenzie.

"Grandma, What Great Songs You Sang!" was a largely experimental set comprising songs from an earlier age. "Miss Dynamite" (known simply as "Brenda Lee" in the USA) shows how quickly she was able to establish her own recording persona given the right material. Both LP were produced by Owen Bradley and this 2 on 1 CD reissue has been mastered from the original stereo recordings.

Tom Jones became one of the most popular vocalists to emerge from the British Invasion. Since the mid-'60s, Jones has sung nearly every form of popular music – pop, rock, show tunes, country, dance, and techno, he's sung it all. His actual style – a full-throated, robust baritone that had little regard for nuance and subtlety – never changed, he just sang over different backing tracks. On-stage, Jones played up his sexual appeal; it didn't matter whether he was in an unbuttoned shirt or a tuxedo, he always radiated a raw sexuality that earned him a large following of devoted female fans who frequently threw underwear on-stage. Jones' following never diminished over the decades; he was able to exploit trends, earning new fans while retaining his core following.

Along with June Christy, Helen O'Connell, and Julie London, Chris Connor epitomized cool jazz singing in the 1950s. Influenced by Anita O'Day, the torchy, smoky singer wasn't one for aggression. Like Chet Baker on the trumpet or Paul Desmond and Lee Konitz on alto sax, she used subtlety and restraint to their maximum advantage. At the University of Missouri, Connor (who had studied clarinet at an early age) sang with a Stan Kentonish big band led by trombonist Bob Brookmeyer before leaving her native Kansas City for New York in 1947.
