In the first Arab Human Development Report (AHDR), gender inequality was identified as one of the main obstacles to development in the Arab Region, along with the deficits of knowledge and freedom that were addressed in the consequent AHDRs. Written by an independent group of Arab scholars, policy makers, and practitioners, the current volume focuses on the history and contemporary dynamics of Arab women's economic, political, and social empowerment in the region. It details the processes in which gender impacts Arab development while suggesting means of overcoming some of the challenges and building more equitable societies.
This is the fourth installment in the series that was created to provide the Arab region with a needed neutral forum for initiating dialogues and structuring debates to build a reform agenda from within. These reports build on the wealth of Arab knowledge and insight, and present a vision of self-determined change based on a commitment to internal social reform and frank self-assessment. Forging an Arab renaissance is one of the key objectives of the Arab Human Development Series, and to chart the signposts along these routes, the series is a beacon. The reports in this series have proven to be an invaluable resource to scholars and policy makers around the world, and have been well received by the general public and specialized groups.

The Politics of Inequality in Russia (repost)

Thomas F. Remington, "The Politics of Inequality in Russia"
English | ISBN 10: 1107422248 | 2011 | PDF | 234 pages | 3.7 MB

This book investigates the relationship between the character of political regimes in Russia's subnational regions and the structure of earnings and income. Based on extensive data from Russian official sources and surveys conducted by the World Bank, the book shows that income inequality is higher in more pluralistic regions. It argues that the relationship between firms and government differs between more democratic and more authoritarian regional regimes. In more democratic regions, business firms and government have more cooperative relations, restraining the power of government over business and encouraging business to invest more, pay more, and report more of their wages.

The 1930s to 1950s witnessed the rise and dominance of a political culture across much of North India which combined unprecedented levels of mobilization and organization with an effective de-politicization of politics. On the one hand obsessed with world events, people also came to understand politics as a question of personal morality and achievement. In other words, politics was about expressing the self in new ways and about finding and securing an imaginary home in a fast-moving and often terrifying universe…
The Firm as a Collaborative Community: The Reconstruction of Trust in the Knowledge Economy

Charles Heckscher (Editor), Paul S. Adler (Editor), «The Firm as a Collaborative Community: The Reconstruction of Trust in the Knowledge Economy»
Oxford University Press, USA | ISBN 0199286035 | May 2006 | PDF | 608 Pages | 3,50 Mb

This volume explores the changing nature of community in modern corporations. Community within and between firms - the fabric of trust so essential to contemporary business - has long been based on loyalty. This loyalty has been largely destroyed by three decades of economic turbulence, downsizing, and restructuring. Yet community is more important than ever in an increasingly complex, knowledge-intensive economy. The thesis of this volume is that a new form of community is slowly emerging - one that is more flexible and wider in scope than the community of loyalty, and that transcends the limitations of both traditional Gemeinschaft and modern Gesellschaft. We call this form collaborative community. The trend towards collaborative community is difficult to detect amidst the ferocious forces of market and bureaucratic rationalization. But close analysis of some of America's most successful corporations reveals three dimensions of the emerging form…..
