Wake Up Awesome is the second volume of SSTUDIOS, a series of recordings that situates different experimental, avant-garde, and noise artists in new combinations of collaboration and spontaneous creativity. The album includes the trio of long-running Norwegian noise artist and Jazzkamer member Lasse Marhaug, experimental cellist Okkyung Lee, and New York-based sound collector C. Spencer Yeh, joining forces to create 15 tracks of collective improvisation and composed experimental sounds.
Software formed in 1983 by German duo Peter Mergener and Michael Weisser, Software owes much to electronic pioneer Klaus Schulze. Software's music usually builds on sequencer patterns and simple melodies, creating a lighter version of The Schulze style. Their later work is woven into concept albums, yet the music rarely lives up to their poetic aspirations. Software's earlier recordings with Peter Mergener are generally more satisfying.
Chip-Meditation is one of the better efforts from the Software "team" of Peter Mergener and Michael Weisser. The inspiration for the set comes from contemporary philosophers. Their statements regarding rapid change, technological advancement, and the unpredictable stretching of boundaries and human imagination sent Weisser and Mergener to the studio to examine new limits. They have found several questions to ask. The examination of these issues manifests itself in Software's Berlin-school electronica and metallic textures. This is a fairly strong CD. It will appeal to fans of Klaus Schulze, Dweller at the Threshold, and Ashra.
