Three musicians, who all make their homes in Copenhagen, met as a Trio for the very first time in a studio. That initial encounter was recorded, and this extremely fine record is the result. The instigator was Danish drummer Morten Lund. The seed was sown in a conversation with Norwegian saxophonist Marius Neset and Swedish bassist Lars Danielsson, when all three were travelling back by train to Copenhagen from Jazz Baltica in 2012. That encounter gave Lund the idea that a session like this could work. Danielsson and Lund were already familiar with each other from their work in groups led by Caecilie Norby and Ulf Wakenius.

"Avoid the basic concept of the jazz piano trio and make it more groovy, with simple melodies” Iiro Rantala. After the album “My Working Class Hero,” dedicated to John Lennon and “Tears for Esbjörn,” a homage to the influential Swedish pianist, “How Long Is Now?” puts the spotlight fairly and squarely back on to the Finnish pianist, composer and life-force Iiro Rantala. This new trio album with Peter Erskine (drums) and Lars Danielsson (bass) constitutes a many-faceted summing-up of a happy and resoundingly creative phase of Rantala’s life. Rantala says of the new album: “I think this is one of those ‘composition is the king’ kind of projects. The theme, the writing, the mood of the composition are the most important things.” Seven of the thirteen compositions here are by Rantala himself, three tracks by the other players in the trio, and three more are by others who, in their different ways, have helped to construct Rantala’s appealing musical personality.

Marius Neset with London Sinfonietta - Snowmelt (2016)  Music

The sensational young Norwegian saxophonist and composer Marius Neset hinted at broader canvases with his fine small-group album Pinball, and its sparing applications of strings and woodwind. This one sets the full London Sinfonietta chamber orchestra skipping, skidding and soaring through Neset’s intricate and fast-changing 240-page score, with his saxes and exciting quartet at the hot core of the action.

Although it is easy to stereotype Peter Erskine as a fusion drummer due to his notable work with Weather Report, in reality he is a very flexible percussionist. On his trio session for ECM, Erskine is mostly content to back his sidemen (pianist John Taylor and bassist Palle Danielsson). This CD is actually most interesting for the playing of Taylor who contributes three of the originals and plays in a style not that far from Keith Jarrett. In general the music starts out pretty quiet but builds its intensity and holds one's interest. –Scott Yanow

Trio M/E/D is also the album recorded by these three great musicians and friends at the close of their 2014 tour of Italy. Word had recently reached us about the untimely passing of Charlie Haden, and Palle Danielsson played a most-touching and rhapsodic tribute to his predecessor in the Keith Jarrett Quartet. Palle’s musical remembrance was the only silver lining to that dark cloud of news, and I was grateful to witness it and to know that it would be preserved for others to hear.

Lars Danielsson ACT-debut “Libera me“ (ACTSACD 9800-2) left no doubts about his creative versatility. And yet: the bass player, cellist and composer continues to surprise. His latest ACT-release “Mélange Bleu” (ACT 9604-2) shows up a completely new dimension to this musician with enormous potential. Danielsson has surrounded himself with partners like pianist Bugge Wesseltoft, trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer und guitarist Eivind Aarset, all of them specialists for mood music that often develops in before a backdrop of ambient inspired sounds, samples and programmed beats.

Acclaimed roots singer-songwriter Corb Lund delivers a career-defining album with Things That Can’t Be Undone. Lund brought a collection of his most personal and reflective songs he has ever written to producer Dave Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, A Thousand Horses). The result is a dynamic energy that retains Corb’s authenticity. This album, Corb’s 4th for New West Records finds the Canadian based performer poised to continue to grow his audience in the US.
