The red-crowned crane is considered an endangered species both in China and internationally. It is only found in the northeast Asia region. The Zhalong National Nature Reserve in Heilongjiang and Yancheng National Nature Reserve in Jiangsu are the bird's most important habitats in China. The Zhalong Reserve serves mainly mainly as their summer home and the Yancheng Reserve operates an artificial breeding programme. Cranes are regarded as symbols of longevity in China, and Zhalong is called the Hometown of Cranes. Covering an area of 21,000 hectares, the Zhalong Nature Reserve is a wetland with rich biological resources. It is home to 265 kinds of birds.
