Dominique Pifarély's quartet, with long-time musical companions Chevillon and Merville and newer associate Antonin Rayon, provides a marvelous context for the full range of the French violinist's expression. Pifarély thrives in the unstable territory between improvisation and composition. His pieces here establish ideas, structural elements and themes – provisional traces – to encourage textural, lyrical and abstract improvising to develop energetically in the moment. The interplay amongst the players is consistently dynamic and engaging, and Pifarély is inspired to some of his finest soloing. Tracé Provisoire was recorded at Studios La Buissonne in the South of France in July 2015.

French violinist Dominique Pifarély – last heard on ECM a decade ago on Stefano Battaglia’s Re: Pasolini – returns to the label with an outstanding solo violin recital, drawn from performances at the Auditorium Saint-Germain in Poitiers and Cave Dimière in Argenteuil. The music is totally improvised – apart from a free interpretation of the jazz standard “My Foolish Heart” by Victor Young – and it roves through a range of moods and atmospheres, textures and tone colours, dynamically and unpredictably.

After debuting with his quintet on Rouge, reedist Louis Sclavis returned to ECM with French jazz violin phenom Dominique Pifarély to front this trend-setting session. Joined by guitarist Marc Ducret and bassist Bruno Chevillon, the so-called Acoustic Quartet snaps right into action with “Sensible,” the first of four pieces by Sclavis. It is, like every track that follows, an astute blend of composed and improvisatory elements that pairs instruments cleverly and with panache.

An extraordinary enterprise … As an experience of the sounds and styles of French organ culture this boxed set, it seems to me, is indispensable … the body of music is mostly, here, not created but simply made alive by the apt choice of instruments … it is a resource to which to return with delight.

Realisation Robert BRESSON

The story follows a group of nuns as they bring two new members, Anne-Marie and Thérèse, into their family. This particular community of nuns specializes in serving imprisoned women while they are in prison, and offering them a place in the convent when they are freed. Anne-Marie comes to the sisters from a bourgeois life. With no prison in her background, she stands apart from most of the nuns. Thérèse on the other hand, begins the film as the most feared inmate in the prison. Only through Anne-Marie, an instrument of grace in the film, does Thérèse finally find her redemption. What makes Bresson’s film both interesting and excellent is not in his choice of tales, but rather in how he executes this telling of that old redemption story.
