John Mehegan and fellow pianist Eddie Costa join bassist Vinnie Burke in an unusual trio, one of the first full-length jazz sets with two pianists. Mehegan was a powerhouse and Costa was not far behind so together they create music that is sometimes overcrowded but never boring. ~ Scott Yanow

A versatile guitarist and onetime head of the guitar department at the University of Bridgeport, Sal Salvador was a capable soloist and accompanist whose single-string style, shaped by his early interest in the music of Charlie Christian, was augmented by extensive studies of guitar technique. Salvador's years of research, playing, and analysis eventually led to his writing guitar methodology books…

This CD has some great tracks. Main solist are Sal, Costa and Phil. Sal has a great guitar sound and the band sounds great. This is another example of the 50's guitar sound. Much of the interplay between Sal and Costa, is a preview of the recording's Tal Farlow and Costa did a few years later.

This all-star session was put together by Down Beat magazine featuring the winners and runners-up from the magazine's critic's poll in 1957. While John Coltrane's name may leap out at you from the cover art, he only plays his tenor sax on half the songs here. On the remaining material Coltrane leads the orchestra, a new step for him at the time and a glimpse at an interesting early chapter of his history. And what an orchestra it was: composed of the best of the up-and-coming New York jazz scene, the other musicians in the Winner's Circle here include Donald Byrd on trumpet, Al Cohn on baritone sax, Eddie Costa on piano and vibes, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Oscar Pettiford on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums.

Tal Farlow, was an innovative self-taught jazz guitarist who influenced generations of guitarists following in his footsteps. Although some of his peak years as a recording artist occurred during his association with Verve between 1954 and 1959, relatively few of the tracks were available for decades until the release of this comprehensive Mosaic box set. The music is consistently brilliant, as the leader's solos seem to evolve effortlessly, often finding fresh ground in the many standards and classic jazz compositions performed in this set. Aside from the three opening tracks from Farlow's days as a member of vibraphonist Red Norvo's trio, the guitarist is the leader.

Reissue with latest 2015 DSD remastering. Comes with liner notes. An excellent album of tunes with a cool Konitz-like sound – featuring the vastly under-discovered reed work of Lenny Hambro, with piano by Eddie Costa, and guitar by either Sal Salvador or Barry Galbraith. The tracks are short and angular – but have a particularly soulful groove in the mix, one that's really surprising, considering that the overall package makes you think the record would be some sleepy over-wrought major label jazz side. Swings like a mofo from a label like Storyville or Bethlehem – and with tracks that include "Comin Thru", "Blue Light", "I Love You Much Too Much", "Libation For Celebration", and "My Future Just Passed".

Eddie and the Cruisers II: Eddie Lives! is the 1989 sequel to the 1983 cult classic Eddie and the Cruisers, and despite being a failure at the box office, has since joined its predecessor as a cult favorite. It is directed by Jean-Claude Lord, and based on literary characters created by author P. F. Kluge. Michael Paré and Matthew Laurance reprise their roles as Eddie Wilson and Sal Amato, respectively. The film is marketed with the tagline "The legend. The music. The man."
