Happy Feet is the third album by the Canadian jazz singer and voice actress Emilie-Claire Barlow. It was released in 2003. For Juno award winning singer Emilie Claire Barlow, there never was a Plan B. No day jobs or fallback plans in case music didn’t work out. “I’ve always been a singer,” she said. “I just knew that’s what I was, who I was and what I was always going to do.” It has been so much in her blood from the start that the Toronto born jazz vocalist and arranger remembers that she learned to read music around the same time she learned to read words. “It was part of our language,” Barlow said, remembering childhood trips to recording studios with her parents, drummer Brian Barlow and singer Judy Tate.

Emilie-Claire Barlow continues to endear herself with her relaxed, polished demeanour, her charming humour, and a VOICE OF UNFORGETTABLE BEAUTY. Canada’s incomparable vocal jazz jewel, Emilie-Claire Barlow’s 10th album is all about big change. It has a big sound, backed by Netherland’s 69-musician-strong Metropole Orkest conducted by Jules Buckley, which accompanies Barlow’s five-piece band. This album is fresh, it sounds big, arranged to perfection, record & mastered with surgical precision but at the end of the day it is all about Emilie’s flawless voice.

Because Emilie-Claire Barlow is a female jazz singer from Canada, some American jazz enthusiasts have inevitably compared her to Canada's most famous jazz export: Diana Krall. But truth be told, Barlow doesn't sound anything like Krall. While Krall's performances have a sultry, dusky, very nocturnal quality, Barlow's singing has favored a youthful, girlish sweetness. That isn't to say that Barlow's bop-oriented work is unswinging — in fact, she has no problem tackling complex arrangements, high-speed scat singing, and vocalese. Besides, Barlow is from Toronto, not western Canada (where Krall grew up). Barlow has spent her entire life in Toronto, where she was born on June 6, 1976. Her father is jazz drummer Brian Barlow…

This Toronto singer's seventh album is defined by her impeccable diction and song-stealing solos by the likes of guitarist Reg Schwager, pianist Dave Restivo and trumpeter Chase Sanborn. Barlow is an astute technician with a decent scat who shows off her eloquence in English, French and Portuguese.
However, this pristine collection of love-laden tunes – "I'm Glad There Is You," "You Make Me Feel So Young," "You Must Believe In Spring" – lacks passion. Gladly trade that perfect pitch for more warmth.
