Edith Piaf is almost universally regarded as France's greatest popular singer. Still revered as an icon decades after her death, "the Sparrow" served as a touchstone for virtually every chansonnier, male or female, who followed her. Her greatest strength wasn't so much her technique, or the purity of her voice, but the raw, passionate power of her singing. (Given her extraordinarily petite size, audiences marveled all the more at the force of her vocals.) Her style epitomized that of the classic French chanson: highly emotional, even melodramatic, with a wide, rapid vibrato that wrung every last drop of sentiment from a lyric…

Only the second compilation in his long career third, if Smile, the 2003 collection of his soundtrack appearances, is counted Greatest Hits runs 15 songs, the same length as 2001's Anthology, Vol. 1: Cowboy Man. Seven of those songs are shared mainly early singles from his first two albums ("Cowboy Man," "God Will," "Why I Don't Know," "Give Back My Heart," "I Loved You Yesterday," "If I Had a Boat," "If I Were the Man You Wanted") and the rest of the compilation adds his other country charting singles, starting with 1986's "Farther Down the Line," running through 1988's "She's No Lady," and adding "I Married Her Because She Looks Like You," "Stand by Your Man," "Nobody Knows Me," "Don't Touch My Hat," and "Private Conversation." Given that Lovett is as much an album artist as a hitmaker, there are some inevitable omissions here "You've Been So Good Up to Now," a mainstream Top 40 hit in 1992, is absent, as are the Texas tourism anthem "That's Right (You're Not from Texas)" and the Toy Story hit "You've Got a Friend in Me," not to mention deep cuts like "L.A. County," "Here I Am," and "Church," among many others but as a basic portrait of Lovett's best-known material, this is a solid set.

Having sold over 13 million albums, Lisa Stansfield can lay claim to being the UK's top female vocalist of the last 15 years. Biography, this 17-track compilation, would certainly back up her argument. Including her breakthrough as featured vocalist on Coldcut's "People Hold On", it also contains her debut proper ("This is the Right Time") and a string of absurdly memorable hits, such as "Change", "All Woman", "Never", "Never Gonna Give You Up" and her first Number One, "All Around the World".

After the BossHoss released "Dos Bros" their first number one album two years ago, the Berlin country-rockers 2017 have a comprehensive look at their previous work. Cover versions and songs, including "Hey Ya!", "Do not Gimme That," "Do It," "Jolene," and many more.

Simply Red's second major hits collection not only celebrates their illustrious 25-year career but also marks the end of it, thanks to Mick Hucknall's announcement that he will henceforth only be working under his own name. The much more comprehensive 25 features all but two of the tracks included on 1996's Greatest Hits, plus several tracks from the commercially inconsistent last decade. Of course, it's the late-'80s and early-'90s material that made Simply Red, essentially a solo vehicle for Hucknall, a household name. The likes of "A New Flame," "Holding Back the Years," and debut hit "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)" all showcase their signature blue-eyed soul sound…
