The collection contains six current directors, carrying the viewer into the surreal world of madness and paranoia: a rare devotee of the genre engrave-and-paste LEWIS CLARA, creator and destroyer puppet fantasies JENIE Geiser, Jim Trainor, who makes an attempt to explore the spiritual world of animals through hand-drawn animation.

'Gas Planet' is a pretty funny animated short film. Three strange creatures are on the Gas Planet. Something appears from the ground. It is a stick with four balloons on it. The creatures eat the balloons and apparently what is inside causes gas problems. For 1992 it looks quite good as well.

Foam Bath (Habfürdő, 1979) is a film that I’d seen only in bits and pieces so it was exciting to stumble onto the full version posted online. It’s not the best print, and it’s in Hungarian, but its uninhibited creativity shines through. According to animation historian Giannalberto Bendazzi, the 1979 musical directed by György Kovásznai depicts “a groom-to-be who would like to cancel his weding, the bride’s best friend who is falling in love with the groom, the wedding and, overall, the disillusionment of a generation.”

If Japanese animation is gaining an ever-increasing legion of overseas admirers, the work of those active outside of the nation's major studios still appears to be bewilderingly overlooked. One such character is Kihachiro Kawamoto, a pioneer in the neglected field of stop motion puppet animation. Born in 1925, Kawamoto has been working in the medium since the 50s, but it was not until a fortuitous meeting with the Czech maestro Jiri Trnka that his puppets truly began to take on a life of their own.

The film follows Nishi, a loser who has a crush on his childhood girlfriend. After an encounter with the Japanese mafia, the film follows Nishi as he journeys to heaven and back, and ends up trapped in an even more unlikely place. Nishi (and some friends) attempt to break out of their trap, and discover what it truly means to be alive along the way. This is a mind-bending trip that uses some of the most innovative animation ever created.
