In the first section of Next Steps Jazz: 2-5-1 Progressions, Frank expands your chord vocabulary with more movable jazz chord forms: Fifth-string-root forms for the Major 7th, Major 6/9, Minor 7th and Minor 9th chords, and sixth-string-root forms for the Dominant 13th and Dominant Flat 13th. These new forms add color to your jazz chord vocabulary and also equip you to play the 2-5-1 progressions in any key, anywhere on the fretboard.

Gypsy Jazz Duets came together under an unusual and somewhat improvised set of circumstances. Yet, in the true spirit of “gypsy jazz,” those improvisations gave birth to an extraordinary learning experience for any jazz guitarist, particularly for those with a passion for gypsy jazz guitar. TrueFire’s radar screen started beeping loudly when it picked up that two of our favorite jazz players, Andreas Oberg and Frank Vignola would be within a hundred miles of our studios within just a few weeks. Both also happen to be very accomplished students of gypsy jazz guitar, a subject we’ve long wanted to present. And while both artists had heard of each other, they had not met nor played together in the past. Over the course of the next few weeks, we worked out the logistics of the session while Frank and Andreas worked out the curriculum and outline for the course. Frank and Andreas met for the first time on the day of the session to review the material.

Modern Method is far more than a guitar course–as the name implies, it's a completely modern new method for playing the guitar. Although Modern Method has been created by one of the great jazz guitarists of our time, the techniques Frank Vignola shares here are highly applicable to any style of guitar playing. The principles and concepts work as well for rock and metal as they do for the most complex jazz.

An extremely versatile jazz guitarist, Frank Vignola has demonstrated that he is capable of playing everything from fusion and commercial pop-jazz to hard bop, post-bop, and swing. The native New Yorker has a wide variety of influences; everyone from Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, and Pat Metheny to Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian has affected his playing in some way. For Vignola, different influences have asserted themselves at different times — the Reinhardt or Christian influence might be especially prominent in a swing environment, whereas he has sometimes sounded more Metheny-ish in fusion or pop-jazz/NAC settings.

Two of the modern masters of jazz guitar, Bucky Pizzarelli and Frank Vignola are a generation apart in age but of the same mind when it comes to their style of playing. Both lovers of memorable melodies, Pizzarelli has long favored a seven-string electric guitar and primarily sticks to playing inventive rhythm accompaniment behind Vignola's bright lead lines. This duo guitar date focuses on ballads, most of which were standards at one time, though many of them have unjustly fallen from favor at the dawn of a new century, including songs like "Moonlight Serenade" and "Deep Purple"…
