On Guided Tour, jazz's most innovative and accomplished vibraphonist proves that The New Gary Burton Quartet which he premiered last summer on his Mack Avenue debut, Common Ground was no one-trick pony. Featuring the prodigal guitar genius Julian Lage as well as two veterans, bassist Scott Colley and drummer Antonio Sanchez, Guided Tour provides a road map to one of the most dynamic bands on the scene today. On Guided Tour, Burton sought out original material from all the group's members (as he did with Common Ground), illuminating their wide range of cross-cultural musical styles. The program includes Legacy a haunting ballad written by Scott Colley to honor his recently deceased father and the two Antonio Sanchez pieces that bookend the disc: the splashy Latin-themed opener, Caminos, featuring solos from only the percussion instruments (drums and vibes); and Monk Fish, a romp on familiar chords infused with the wry humor found in the music of bop-era pianist Thelonious Monk.

On Gary Burton's debut release on Mack Avenue Records Common Ground, the Grammy-winning pioneer of the four-mallet technique of playing the vibes is not only delivering his first studio album since 2005, but is also introducing his latest band. Well-known throughout his five-decade career for his quartets (beginning with his 1967 group featuring Larry Coryell, Roy Haynes and Steve Swallow), Burton is returning to the configuration for the first time since the mid 90s. He expresses great enthusiasm for the new band's alchemy. I've always liked the vibraphone-guitar sound, says Burton, whose masterful vibes glisten throughout Common Ground. It's something that I discovered when Nashville country guitarist Hank Garland invited me in the 60s to record with him. The sound of the two instruments together has an ideal timbre and coolness.

The final recording by Gary Burton's classic quartet (how about a reunion someday?) features the vibraphonist/leader, guitarist Larry Coryell, bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Bob Moses mixing together aspects of rock, country and folk music in their advanced improvisations. The material (by Mike Gibbs, Burton, Coryell and Bob Dylan) is quite strong, and there are some hints of the avant-garde (including "One, Two, 1-2-3-4" and Burton's freely improvised solo piece "Dreams"). All of the influential Burton-Coryell recordings (among the earliest fusion records) are currently difficult to find and are deserving reissue as a box set.

Features 24 bit remastering and comes with a mini-description. A wonderful live set from Gary Burton – originally issued only in Japan, but a wonderful record that stands strongly with Gary's classic early 70s work for Atlantic and ECM Records! The group's a quartet – and has Gary's vibes alongside warm guitar lines from Sam Brown – a player whose sense of tone and timing really echoes that of Burton – cascading fresh sounds one minute, laying back in waves the next – always hitting the right balance of space and tone to keep things right.
