Former Cynic bassist/Stick virtuoso Sean Malone has assembled a super band once again for this go-round, and the cast features none other than Steve Hackett (Genesis), Bill Bruford (King Crimson, Yes), Jim Matheos (Fates Warning, OSI), and former Cynic members Jason Gobel, Sean Reinert, and Paul Masvidal. The second album is very much grounded in the British prog rock movement of the 1970s, and particularly in the sound of King Crimson. It's just accomplished instrumental prog rock with a heavy fusion flavor, and a rather somber, cerebral air, though there are plenty of hard rock dynamics, and occasional traces of other textures.

Emergent is the second release under the moniker "Gordian Knot". A common question asked is if GK is a solo effort, or a band. The answer is that it's a bit of both. While Sean Malone is the primary composer, each musician involved is free to contribute in his or her own way. Suggestions are made regarding certain key elements, creating a framework within which each performer adds his or her own interpretation. As with the début CD, Gordian Knot benefits its own genre by not being a part of it; in other words, the core of the music is the structure and pitches, presenting itself in several textural guises all the while leaving room for each performer to show his musicianship and voice.
Emergent is an extension of the compositional style presented in the first Gordian Knot release, with an emphasis on large-scale compositions (Some Brighter Thing, Singing Deep Mountain), thematic content between and within the pieces, and dense, contrapuntal layers.

The Gordian Knot is the 1968 debut album by The Gordian Knot. Released on Verve Records, they only recorded one album before splitting up. Only one single was released as a promotional item, "If Only I Could Fly." Band member Jim Weatherly went on to a more successful solo career. This is taken from a 2007 CD reissue on Rev-Ola.

Modern prog fusion supergroup, founded by great Cynic bassist Sean Malone. On this debut album participated Warr guitar genius Trey Gunn (ex-King Crimson), drummer Sean Reinert (Cynic), John Myung (Dream Theater, Chapman Stick-as guest) and two morw Warr/stick guitarists! You can enjoy a very good melange of Fusion, King Crimson Art Rock and a little bit Prog Metal. Absolutely great debut! Should be interesting for modern KC lovers, must have for Trey Gunn or Sean Malone fans. Very recommended for everyone searching for fresh and modern prog, running out from neo-prog cliches!

Performing Purcell's 'Dido and Aeneas' is a task that has made conductors very curious - the many and varied recordings and performances of it prove it. The circumstances in which the work was originally performed is somewhat vague, the manner of performing Purcell generally is not very clear, the scores found are varied (no manuscript was ever found) and there are two missing parts - the prologue and probably a ballet or choir section at the end of the second act. I have heard several recordings of the work, however, I feel McGegan has done it in a way which sounds just right, as if this is how ot should have been done. First of all, the choice of basing the performance on a couple of the scores found seems to be appropriate, and in my opinion the right mix was done here. Lorraine Hunt makes a brilliant Dido, she has a very dramatic power mixed with a pure voice and a great sense of the time. Lisa Saffer is the most wonderfull Belinda I have ever heard, singing softly and sweetly and expressing the character very strongly.

Gordian Knot was the debut album of Sean Malone's (Cynic) progressive rock project of the same name.
Stylistically, Gordian Knot has textures associated with metal, combined with structures associated with progressive rock, jazz, and the Western classical tradition, making it difficult to classify. Gordian Knot benefits its own genre by not being a part of it; in other words, the core of the music is the structure and pitches, presenting itself in several textural guises all the while leaving room for each performer to show his musicianship and voice. The primary goal of the CD was to focus on composition and the combination of performers that would otherwise never have performed together, including a track (Srikara Tal) featuring 3 'touch-style' performers together on Chapman Stick and Warr Guitar for the first time. With the flood of thrown-together 'supergroups', critics and fans alike were surprised and relieved by the lack of gratuitous soloing that marks so many other releases. Gordian Knot is the antithesis of today's 'supergroup', despite the résumés of those involved.
