Acis and Galatea (HWV 49) was originally a masque composed by George Frideric Händel. He first composed this piece while he was living at Cannons (the seat of James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos) during the summer of 1718. It is set to a libretto by John Gay, Alexander Pope, and John Hughes, who borrowed freely from John Dryden's English translation of Ovid published in 1717, The Story of Acis, Polyphemus and Galatea...

Opus 3 is made up of assorted versions of concerti. Händel arranged and re-arranged many of these works often and so a definitive edition is probably impossible to assemble....

Review
The cd is a sampler of O'Dette's recordings with the label Harmonia Mundi ranging from solo lute pieces to vocal ensembles. However, the mixture of the 22 tracks over 72 minutes becomes a fantastic musical and emotional journey. I quickly became attached to the album. Fantastic! This music and the performances of O'Dette have taken on a life of their own. It is a beautiful album that I would highly recommend to anybody that has a love for the lute as well as the music of the 15th-17th centuries. It is an album you will keep and play forever and ever.

This bargain-priced box set is a must-have for anyone who loves Handel's operas. Whilst Nicholas McGegan has had his critics over some of his Goettingen recordings, it cannot be denied that he has rescued some of Handel's finest arias and operas from the dustbin of History...

Handel: Aci, Galatea e Polifemo

Score of Händel's Aci, Galatea e Polifemo
Chrysander | Edition 1892 | 117 pages | Single jpgs (1000x1400) in a zip-file | 21 MB

Aci, Galatea e Polifemo is a dramatic cantata - also called a serenata - by George Frederic Handel. It was first performed at Naples on 19 July 1708; the completed score is dated to 16 June 1708. The serenata was commissioned by the Duke of Alvito to adorn the celebrations for his marriage. The plot is virtually the same as in Handel's later English-language pastoral opera Acis and Galatea.

Queen Caroline was an emblematic female figure of the 18th century: the wife of King George II of England, a woman of great beauty, a champion of science and the arts, Caroline d’Ansbach was also the friend and patroness of Handel. The latter was entrusted with the solemn music composed for the grand ceremonies that marked the reign – be it «The King shall rejoice», given for the King’s coronation, the «Queen Caroline» Te Deum written for her own ascension to the throne, or «The Ways of Zion do mourn» performed at her funeral. This recording brings together, for the first time, three works underlining the strong link between the monarch and his favourite composer. This performance by the complete forces of the choir and orchestra of Les Arts Florissants brings to life these scores which are both flamboyant and brimming over with humanity.

Although Handel and Caldara never collaborated, it's nearly certain that their paths crossed in Rome in 1709, where both held prestigious appointments. The highly imaginative concept behind the Carmelite Vespers is a conceptual construction of what they might have put together for the night mass for Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Some of the Handel might be familiar; the Caldara psalms and antiphons are meticulously performed and provide an intimate relief from the large works. The new context is scholarly and refreshing, and there's a special highlight in soprano Roberta Invernizzi's performance.

Brahms' works for piano open and close his career as a composer. In his earliest sets of variations, especially those of Op. 9, the melody is of primary importance, and Brahms clings to it while freely changing the harmony. His later studies of Beethoven, however, led to his transformation of the melody into something new, adhering to the theme's basic phrase structure and harmonic pattern. As had Bach in his "Goldberg" Variations and Beethoven in the "Diabelli" Variations, Brahms, in the Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Händel, Op. 24, constructed a sprawling masterwork ……..
