Arena Rock, Classic Rock, Hard Rock | Geffen Records #B0001101-02

Those who do not pay much attention to record company affiliations should be warned that this discount-priced album, billed as the "best of Aerosmith," represents only their most popular recordings made for Geffen Records between 1987 and 1994. That said, it represents them well, including all 11 of Aerosmith's Top 40 hits from the period ("Angel," "Janie's Got a Gun," "Love in an Elevator," etc.), plus the track "Deuces Are Wild" from the album The Beavis and Butt-Head Experience. This, of course, was the period when the bandmembers were collaborating with such songwriting hacks as Desmond Child, Holly Knight, and Jim Vallance to considerable commercial effect, maintaining the comeback they had launched with Run-D.M.C.'s remake of "Walk This Way"…

Those who do not pay much attention to sonic trends in the record industry should be warned that while the album was "96k/24-bit mastered from the original master tapes by Erick Labson," Labson's mastering approach responds to the tendency toward preparing music for its compression into MP3 files for digital downloading more than for old-fashioned CD audiophile listening; Labson has adopted a "push up all the faders" sound that is overly loud and poorly detailed; the late Bruce Fairbairn, original producer of these recordings, must be turning over in his grave.

Pop/Soft/Glam Rock | Music Club Deluxe #MCDLX049

2007 two CD compilation from the '70s British Pop/Rock band fronted by Chris Norman. Smokie's sound was a combination of hook-laden songs supplied by top pop team Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman and distinctive but unashamedly Stateside - influenced Soft-Rock harmonies. Though their very first television performance was on the Rock-credible Old Grey Whistle Test, they found themselves virtual residents on Top of the Pops as the '70s ended. This collection tells their story superbly. 36 tracks including 'If You Think You Know How to Love Me', 'Living Next Door to Alice' and 'Oh Carol'. Also includes 'Stumblin' In', Chris Norman's hit duet with Suzi Quatro!

2007 release to coincide with the recent #1 UK hit re-recording of 'I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)', which they did for Comic Relief. This is the most complete collection from this Scottish Pop/Folk duo currently on the market and contains songs filled with melody, heartache, humor and strength. Features 21 tracks including both versions of 'I'm Gonna B (500 Miles)' (the original and the Comedy Relief version), 'I'm On My Way' (featured in Shrek), 'Letter From America', 'Throw The R Away' and many others. A fantastic introduction to the rest of their catalog if you are only familiar with the 'big' hits previously mentioned.
