Genre: Jazz | Label: Art of Life Records

The talented guitarist Joe Diorio has mostly recorded for obscure record companies throughout his career including this set for the completely forgotten Zdenek label. The early-'80s LP features Diorio (who has always had his own sound) in a trio/quartet with other Los Angeles-based musicians: keyboardist Carl Schroeder, bassist Bob Magnusson and drummer Jim Plank. Diorio stretches out on five standards (including Jobim's "Bonita") plus one of his originals, playing some fine post-bop guitar that is often strikingly original.

Genre: Jazz | Label: Allegro

On this highly enjoyable CD, Joe Diorio performs unaccompanied solo guitar renditions of 16 (mostly early) compositions of Antonio Carlos Jobim, plus his own "To Jobim with Love." Diorio pays loving respect to the classic melodies and his improvisations usually stay fairly close to the themes. Among the tunes explored are "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars," "Desafinado," "One Note Samba," "Wave," "The Girl from Ipanema," and "No More Blues." Truly beautiful music.

Genre: Jazz, Swing | Label: Ram Records

Guitarist Diorio knew Wes Montgomery and presents this tribute to his hero, but very little here sounds distinctly like Montgomery. It's all the brilliant leader in a variety of mostly trio settings, but duos and solos alternate on these twelve tracks. Bassist Steve LaSpina and drummer Steve Bagby are both underrated jazz men like Diorio, but together the three mesh well, and on the non-trio tracks prove they have something to say on their own…

Genre: Jazz | Label: Pablo

Pablo serves up another scoop of material from the delicious John Pisano guitar duet sessions of summer/fall 1994 with no dropoff at all in tasty musical value. Lee Ritenour, Phil Upchurch, Ted Greene and Dori Caymmi return from the Among Friends CD, and additional cooking sessions with Joe Diorio and acoustic-only duets with Gene Bertoncini turn up. Along with a quota of standards and overlooked gems like Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Captain Bacardi," there are more delectable Pisano compositions to be heard, five in all. One of the best is the jazz waltz with Diorio, "Blues for Joe," presumably written in memory of longtime partner Joe Pass, who died two months before the session; the opening sounds more like a celebration of Wes Montgomery…

Tenor-saxophonist Eddie Harris's third album features him exploring 11 themes from Henry Mancini's score for Breakfast At Tiffany 's. Harris stretches out the most on "Moon River" and the title cut but he does justice to the nine lesser-known themes. This long out-of-print LP holds one's interest throughout and, although Harris comes up with plenty of fresh ideas, he also never leaves the melody far behind. His unlisted backup group is a septet that includes trombonist Joe Avant, vibraphonist Charles Stepney, pianist Willie Pickens and guitarist Joe Diorio. A fine (if obscure) outing. –Scott Yanow

A comprehensive collection of intervallic approaches for rock guitar. Nicolas Slonimsky published the Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns in 1947, which was largely ignored for years until the likes of John Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard, Allan Holdsworth, Frank Zappa, Paul Grabowsky and many other significant artists started crediting the material as a source of great inspiration, which sparked highly creative improvisation.

Textures, layers, grooves, CHOPS…it's all here. Scott's melodic voice and tone stand out. Carlton and Hertz stand confidently along side any of Scott's other rhythm sections. Icing on the cake is the album's SOUND!!! Fans of Scott's more fusion oriented work (such as myself) will be pleased with Vibe Station. Awesome modern Strat sound in a monster power-trio. Five stars…
