"…This second volume pairs the first and third sonatas, so now we have the complete sonatas in period performances. Instead of the Johann Baptist Streicher, an 1849/50 Bösendorfer is employed and gives a certain extra element of brightness, weight and tonal depth without sacrificing anything of the clarity that period instruments tend to bring to the proceedings. (…) The recording from MDG, again a 2+2+2 production, is as clear and rounded as that in volume 1. Very highly recommended and one looks forward to future volumes." ~SA-CD.net

…It is often said that Brahms was late in writing a symphony but Rittner's playing shows that to be false; these works are symphonic in scope and scale - all that was left was for Brahms to produce an orchestration. Apart from capturing the grand sweep of the phrases and the structure of the compositions, Rittner also delivers on the poetry of the music. No detail escapes his attention but neither does it interrupt the musical narrative. Rittner's playing is fully at the service of the music, not his self-aggrandisement. The recording from MDG, again a 2+2+2 production, is as clear and rounded as that in volume 1.

…Playing a piano of 1851 (well tuned but far from the crystalline brilliance of a modern Steinway - think Bösendorfer crossed with a fortepiano) by Johann Baptist Streicher, Hardy Rittner draws powerful, dramatic yet eloquent musical sounds from this veteran instrument. (…) The recording from MDG is a 2+2+2 variant but thanks to the single instrument, there is less sonic confusion and the quality is of amongst the highest that the company has issued.

…If you're unfamiliar with Feldman's nuanced, nondevelopmental music, this may not be the easiest point of entry, but . . . well, there probably isn't an easy point of entry after all, so why not just dive in?

Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff assimilated the influence of jazz with genuinely distinctive results. The Fünf Pittoresken absorb both Dada and Scott Joplin whilst more classicist influences, such as Ravel, suffuse the Second Piano Sonata. Esquisses de Jazz (1927) is perhaps his most outstanding jazz-influenced piece—a perfect synthesis of dance rhythms, wit and irony.

Franciszek Lessel (1780 – 1838) was born in Puławy (Poland). In 1799 Franciszek Lessel went to study with Joseph Haydn and continued to do until the man's death. He worked as a court musician, headed Warsaw's Amateur Music Society, and gave lessons on how to play the glass harmonica. In later life he largely had non-musical administrative and inspector jobs. Among his most noted pieces is Fantaisie in E minor, which was dedicated to Cecylia Beydale.
