Performing is like meditation, Johannes says, With total mental, physical and spiritual concentration, the music emerges pure and without restraint. It's heaven. A slice of heaven is delivered to listeners each time the evolving, self-taught Toronto, Canada, guitarist performs his original compositions with virtuoso speed and brilliance. In addition to his mastery of the Spanish guitar, Johannes is also an accomplished pianist and performs instruments as diverse as the bazouki, wood flute, mandolin and bass. Johannes' work is deeply rooted in the South American and Caribbean cultures he experienced while on a spiritual journey of personal and artistic awakening. Influences from his travels to Spain, the Caribbean Islands and Latin America shaped his profound respect for life and moved him to create new musical soundscapes.

Upbeat, refined, and congenial as ever, Cafe Tropical is the sixth release from Canadian-born guitarist Johannes Linstead; and like the others before it, it's a crisply performed, easy-to-like collection of nouveau flamenco destined to brighten the atmosphere, particularly at summer patio parties. Linstead, principally playing Spanish guitar (plus keyboards and assorted percussion with contributions from 10 other instrumentalists) is a nimble guitarist and tasteful composer who tones down flamenco's most incendiary tendencies just enough to create lively, feel-good melodies with suitable-for-all-audiences intentions. Prime examples: the disc's warm, soulful opener, "Cien Fuegos," and the trumpet-fueled title track, a piece that closely parallels "Mango" from 2001's Guitarra del Fuego.

The notion of flamenco music approached in a polite, genteel manner may sound inherently contradictory to some, but Canadian-born guitarist Johannes Linstead accomplishes the task with admirable grace and poise. As with his four previous recordings, Linstead's Mediterranea is short on the fire, sweat, and florid technique found in the work of Jesse Cook and other nouveau flamenco contemporaries. Instead, Linstead leans more on heart, melodicism, and adroit fingering to craft a lively yet dignified sound that, while perhaps tame to some ears, elevates his instrumentals beyond simple easy-listening fare. Linstead (Spanish guitar, bouzouki, keyboards) is an accomplished player (for evidence, consider his energized licks on "Sangre del Toro") whose arrangements create a colorful, accessible sound well-suited to listeners with a taste for what could be termed "smooth flamenco."

"Zabuca" is a fiery, passionate Spanish guitar tour de force from Johannes Linstead. Linstead's fourth album to date, the title aptly translates to "shake-up" or "to stir the feelings of." There is a wide range of emotions and playing styles in the ten tracks, from the festive "La Cabanita en la Playa" and "Guayabera" to the gorgeous "Echoes of the Forest" and sweetly seductive "Eleni." Linstead is joined by a variety of musicians on various percussion instruments, piano, flute, bass, cello, vocalizations, brass, and violin, giving this album a very big and full sound. The upbeat pieces are rhythmic and fun, and the quieter ones are warm and heartfelt, indicating how versatile this guitar virtuoso really is. Both traditional and contemporary flamenco styles are utilized, but this album is very much in the present. "Eleni" is a ballad from the heart that is passionate, a little melancholy, and a bit mysterious.

Johannes Linstead is a Canadian-born guitarist with a European-sounding name who composes and performs music best described as Latin lite. Linstead, a native of Toronto, plays an easy-on-the-ear brand of flamenco music that will likely frustrate genre purists but will endear him to listeners who enjoy flamenco's sunnier side, minus its earthier traditions. Linstead's capable playing, backed by polite percussion and, occasionally, piano and wind instruments, is clean, colorful, and spirited, and his sense of melody, tinged by pop instincts (most evident on "Mezza Luna"), yields an easy-listening, feel-good atmosphere that never really lags from start to finish. Make no mistake, any listener searching for flamenco music brimming with bold ethnic flourishes is advised to look elsewhere. But for people in the mood for a friendly, melodic approach to flamenco played with style and respectable panache, Linstead's music makes a nice choice.

I first heard David Arkenstone several decades ago on a CD called In The Wake of the Wind and I became a fan. Then, maybe a decade ago, I came across flutist Nicholas Gunn doing a series of albums about the deserts of Arizona and the Grand Canyon, and I got hooked on him. About two years ago I heard an album by Johannes Linstead and found him to be one of the catchiest new modern flamenco guitar players to come along. I have never heard pianist Loren Gold before, but he apparently has a couple of CDs out and tours with pop acts.
