Leonard Slatkin and the BBC Symphony Orchestra deliver a coolly new-age performance of Colin McPhee's proto-minimalist masterpiece Tabuh-Tabuhan, very similar to Dennis Russell Davies' recording for Argo. It's very well played and very beautiful although quite different from Howard Hanson's speedier and more dynamic rendition on Mercury Living Presence. The Britten/McPhee recording of Balinese Ceremonial Music has been available previously but makes an apt coupling, especially in the company of this new suite (arranged by Donald Mitchell and Mervyn Cooke) from Britten's The Prince of the Pagodas. This contains a huge slice (some 50 minutes) of the ballet, including the exotic "pagoda" music inspired by the composer's trip to Bali, but unaccountably omits some of the best numbers from the usual suite, such as the final pas de deux of Belle Rose and the Prince. All the same, like the McPhee it's very well played and finely recorded too, making this enterprising release well worth owning from just about any point of view.

I Asked for Water, She Gave Me Gasoline is the second album of (mostly) acoustic blues stylings from Tony McPhee and some talented friends, including Jo-Ann Kelly, Andy Fernbach, Graham Hines and Brett Marvin…This is distinctly a late-'60s record at times, in sound and intent,…but that's not a problem when you're dealing with talent this prodigious, because it's all honest and unaffected.

Coming into the Country is an unforgettable account of Alaska and Alaskans. It is a rich tapestry of vivid characters, observed landscapes, and descriptive narrative, in three principal segments that deal, respectively, with a total wilderness, with urban Alaska, and with life in the remoteness of the bush.

Jazz / Modern Jazz / Avant-Garde Jazz / Violas / Saxophone

It is difficult to think of this as anything but pure joy, although in some ways it is less intense than other releases led by the remarkable violist Mat Maneri and it is stamped with a cerebral quality from the start. There is a surprisingly charming density, too, that comes through on most tracks, though as with most of his work, there are few if any melodic references but instead a focus on color and sound. Maneri carefully paces himself and the quintet so that every note counts, resulting in some of his most interesting work on disk. At times it might seem somewhat slow, even morose, but upon close listening a diversity and a depth are revealed that belie the noir episodes.

Psychedelic Rock, Prog Rock, Hard Rock

This was originally released in 1970 and has excellently been reissued by Akarma, who has released some box sets by classic artists such as Atomic Rooster, Ultimate Spinach, Toad, and Country Joe and the Fish. McPhee has nothing to do with Tony McPhee and the Groundhogs except that they play heavy rock that is Blues inspired. The band is fronted by female vocalist Faye Lewis, who sounds like a cross between Janis Joplin and Grace Slick but with no harsh edge to her voice…
