Captain Yossarian, stationed on a Mediterranean island during World War II, begs Doc Daneeka to certify him unfit for flying. Daneeka explains, however, that "Catch-22" prevents him from grounding Yossarian for insanity since anyone who voluntarily flies a bombing mission is crazy; therefore, anyone requesting to be grounded must be sane…

Catch-22 is like no other novel we have ever read. It has its own style, its own rationale, its own extraordinary character. It moves back and forth from hilarity to horror. It is outrageously funny and strangely affecting. It is totally original.

Direction Mike Nichols' anti-war comedy, an adaptation of Joseph Heller's anti-establishment 1961 first novel, was an autobiographical novel about a bomber squadron and its pilots in WW-II Italy on a Mediterranean island: Captain Yossarian (Alan Arkin), one of the neurotic B-52 bomber pilots, trapped by 'catch-22' logic
("Let me see if I've got this straight: in order to be grounded, I've got to be crazy and I must be crazy to keep flying. But if I ask to be grounded, that means I'm not crazy any more and I have to keep flying")

A monumental artifact of contemporary American literature, almost as assured of longevity as the statues on Easter Island...Catch-22 is a novel that reminds us once again of all that we have taken for granted in our world and should not, the madness we try not to bother and notice, the deceptions and falsehoods we lack the will to try to distinguish from truth.

One of the Best AntiWar Movies Ever, like Grand Illusion, Path of Glory or Waltz With Bashir.

Catch-22 is a 1970 war film adapted from the book of the same name by Joseph Heller. Considered a black comedy revolving around the "lunatic characters" of Heller's satirical novel, the film was mired in production problems and artistic issues that led to its commercial failure.

Although a talented production team – which included director Mike Nichols and screenwriter Buck Henry (who also acted in the film) – worked on the film for two years, the complex task of recreating a World War II bomber base and translating an anti-war satire proved daunting.Besides Henry, the cast included Alan Arkin, Martin Balsam, Anthony Perkins, Paula Prentiss, Martin Sheen, Jon Voight and Orson Welles.

CATCH-22 has its own extraordinary character - and its title has entered the dictionary. Moving between hilarity and horror, it is outrageously funny and strangely affecting, a microcosm of the twentieth-century world as it might look to someone dangerously sane. The story of a handful of the wildest flyboys of World War II, their tight little Mediterranean island, and their loose Italian women, CATCH-22 is a novel of war and peace, of beauty and the beast within all men. The Catch-22: soldiers who won't fly a plane into combat must be crazy, but if they ask not to fly on the grounds that they are crazy, they must be sane. Heller's novel celebrates the pluck of its protagonist, Yossarian, who refuses to comply with the war's insanity.
"Vulgarly, savagely, bitterly funny . . . . A dazzling performance." (The New York Times)
