The Epic is saxophonist Kamasi Washington's aptly titled, triple-length, 172-minute debut album for Brainfeeder. He is a veteran of L.A.'s music scene and has played with Gerald Wilson, Harvey Mason, Flying Lotus, and Kendrick Lamar (his horn is prominently featured on To Pimp a Butterfly), to name but a few. Most of his bandmates have played together since high school, and it shows. There are two drummers (including Ronald Bruner), two bassists (including Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner on electric), two keyboardists, trumpet, trombone, and vocals (Patrice Quinn). In various settings, they are supported by a string orchestra and full choir conducted by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. Washington composed 13 of these 17 tunes; he also meticulously arranged and produced them. At just over six to nearly 15 minutes, the jams leave room for engaged improvisation. The Epic is based on a concept, though it's unnecessary to grasp in order to enjoy. The music reflects many inspirations – John Coltrane, Horace Tapscott's Pan-African People's Arkestra, Azar Lawrence's Prestige period, Donald Byrd's and Eddie Gale's jazz and choir explorations, Pharoah Sanders' pan global experiments, Afro-Latin jazz, spiritual soul, and DJ culture.

Flying Lotus welcomes Kamasi Washington - who features on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly - to his Brainfeeder label with this monumental full-length entitled The Epic. Much like Kendrick and FlyLo, Washington produces LPs that exist somewhere between the realms of demi-opera and populist. Clocking in with 17 all surpassing the 7 minute mark, The Epic explores areas of cosmic jazz, freeform saxophone-led composition and a rotation of far-reaching influences to build an odyssey that effortlessly spans across almost 3 hours with the help of a a 32-piece orchestra and a 20-member choir. Like the rest of the Brainfeeder roster, pigeonholing the Kamasi Washington is a truly impossible task. The Epic invites you to embrace the ambition and lose yourself in the grandeur.

The story begins with a man on high. He is an old man, a warrior, and the guardian to the gates of a city. Two miles below his mountainous perch, he observes a dojo, where a group of young men train night and day. Eventually, the old man expects a challenger to emerge. He hopes for the day of his destruction, for this is the cycle of life.

Genius Ronald Bruner, Jr. has enlisted a bunch of geniuses like George Duke, Thundercat, Mac Miller, Kamasi Washington, Danielle Withers etc. for his debute solo album, which will probably be pretty jazzy and R&B. There are quite a few famous families in the music business: the Jacksons, the Braxtons, the Debarges, the Isleys and the Leverts to name some off top of the dome. But, unless you’re a true music geek for knowing who’s who, you might not yet know of the Bruner Bunch. The Grammy Award winning family of musicians consist of keyboardist Jameel Bruner, formerly of The Internet; Stephen Bruner, a celebrated bassist whose recent project Drunk reunites him with To Pimp a Butterfly star Kendrick Lamar and father, Ronald Bruner Sr., a drummer who has worked with Diana Ross, The Temptations and Gladys Knight.
