This DVD captures concert performances from the mid-80s of La Mer, Afternoon of a Faun, and the 2nd Suite from Daphne and Chloe. These are wonderfully sensual pieces that von Karajan had recorded several times before and the DVD really captures some great performances. If you like these pieces, this is definitely a DVD to own.

Founded in 2005, the Feininger Trio has dedicated itself to the intense, prolonged study of the piano trio. This release finds the ensemble navigating the works of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, two figures intimately associated with musical impressionism. Debussy wrote his Piano Trio in G Major at the young age of 18, and the piece abounds with the sonic surprises and experimentations indicative of a blossoming composer. In contrast, Ravel’s Piano Trio in A Minor demonstrates the artful considerations of sonority and balance of a composer well into his career. Also included in this release is Debussy’s playful Petite Suite for 4 Hand Piano, arranged for piano trio by David Riniker.

In 2005, Adrian Oetiker (piano), Christoph Streuli (violin) and David Riniker (cello) formed the Feininger Trio. They named it after painter, designer and Bauhaus co-founder Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956), whose former atelier in the Berlin district of Zehlendorf was located in the vicinity of the room where the musicians now rehearse. Having known one another since their studies, the three musicians had gathered experience in the meantime as chamber musicians in other formations. All three of them wanted to apply that experience to an intense, prolonged study of the piano trio, a genre which possesses a rich, wide-ranging repertoire. They started by mastering the Classical and Romantic core repertoire, particularly the piano trios of Brahms and Dvoˇrák. At the same time they pursued a particular interest in Modernism (Ives, Zemlinsky, Korngold). The current release featuring Czech piano trio masterpieces is dedicated to the memory of the great violinist Josef Suk (1929-2011).

This venerable recording by the Italian Quartet from 1965 was, for many years, the standard reference copy of both works either individually or as a coupling. One of the considerable virtues of this group of players was that they could always be relied upon to play in tune and to play with musicianship. The competition was not so strong as it is today as many of the alternative groups simply could not deliver accuracy in tuning (or even worse, the notes). This was rarely commented upon in review magazines at the time, a source of complete bemusement for me, but as one who was expected to play in tune I found listening to string chamber music almost beyond bearing for much of the time - except for this group.

The Debussy and Ravel string quartets stand–along with some of Faure and Franck's chamber music–among the most elegant, refined pieces of music ever written: the perfect accompaniment for tea, madeleines and the emembrance of things past. It is hard to imagine anyone playing this music better than the Emerson String Quartet.

Radu Lupu recorded batches of Mozart and Schubert violin sonatas with the great violinist Szymon Goldberg (regrettably unavailable at present, but watch for them). This seems to be his only other recording of violin sonatas with someone else. Kyung Wha Chung is a powerful virtuoso who can play all the great showpieces, but she scales down her approach to express the muted beauty of the Debussy. Of course, she gives a powerful, extroverted reading to the Franck Sonata, which demands such an approach. Lupu collaborates all the way in both expressive worlds. The additional Debussy and Ravel, from a 1962 LP, are tasty bonuses.

The Quartetto Italiano is regarded as one of the finest string quartets of the twentieth century. The group generally focused on quartet-only repertory, avoiding performance with guest artists of quintets and other larger compositions.
