With a 552-character title that dwarfs Fiona Apple's random stream of consciousness, When the Pawn…, Most of the Remixes… is the first official compilation of the various mash-ups and mixes from the Dewaele brothers produced under their more familiar guise of Soulwax. Like their 2 Many DJ's alias' series, As Heard on Radio Soulwax, the two-CD collection showcases their bootlegging sensibilities on 14 tracks which tackle artists as diverse as operatic prog rockers Muse (on the buzzing synths and crashing cymbals of "Muscle Museum"), Belgian-American, post-industrial outfit Lords of Acid (on a doom-laden techno re-working of "I Sit on Acid"), and Aussie pop princess Kylie Minogue (on a scuzzy garage rock retooling of "Can't Get You Out of My Head"). Like most mixtapes, the standards vary.

Building on the rapping style of eccentrics Kool Keith and Del the Funky Homosapien, Def Jux headliner Aesop Rock became one of the hottest MCs in the post-millennial underground. After a pair of self-released LPs (Appleseed, Music for Earthworms), he recorded Float for Mush in 2000. The former Ian Bavitz then issued a pair of singles – "Coma" and "Boom Box" – for another underground rap label paragon, Definitive Jux.

The Simmons SDS-800 is an analog 80s drum synth, responsible for the cosmic syn-tom ('beeww beeww') sounds used on countless disco, boogie & reggae recordings. In the 90s, it became re-popularized in the techno world, with the raw, resonant white noise oscillator being used for jarring hi hat and snare programming. And most recently, the Simmons drum sounds have become a signature for punk funk groups like LCD Soundsystem.

Though Arcade Fire have always been comfortable making grand statements, they’ve also been generous with nuance. After joining forces with LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy on 2013’s Reflektor, the Canadian outfit bring in a similarly impressive crew of co-producers—Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter, Pulp’s Steve Mackey—for Everything Now, an album whose jaunty, disco-indebted art-rock is weighted with haunting takes on information overload (the ABBA-esque title track) and nostalgia (“Signs of Life”). “If you can’t see the forest for the trees, just burn it all down,” frontman Win Butler sings on “We Don’t Deserve Love,” a gorgeous yet disorienting ballad at the album’s conclusion. “And bring the ashes to me.”

The highly anticipated fifth studio long-player from the stalwart Canadian indie rockers, Everything Now arrives after a two-year gap that saw the normally industrious collective taking a respite from public life. In May 2017 the band performed an intimate secret show in Montreal, where they performed six new songs, and at the end of the month they released the spirited and disco-tinged "Everything Now," the lead single from the upcoming album of the same name. The LP was co-produced by Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk, Pulp bassist Steve Mackey, and longtime collaborator Markus Dravs.

Produced by Leon Vynehall and Ben Baptie, Look At The Powerful People demonstrates that Formation’s forward-thinking sonics have evolved to reach their full potential. Highlights such as On The Board and A Friend capture Formation’s irrepressible and bass-heavy cocktail of dirty dance rhythms which pound with the fiery energy of their live performances. At the other extreme, Blood Red Hand in an understated, slow-burning anthem and the closing track Ring offers something entirely different with a dreamy, piano-orientated approach closing the album on an upbeat high. In addition to the new tracks, the album also features fresh new productions of some of the key singles from Formation’s journey to date in the shape of Pleasure and Drugs.

After stunning the mainstream pop machine into a state of huffy, new school e-disbelief by beating out Eminem, Lady Antebellum, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry for the 2011 Album of the year Grammy, Arcade Fire seemed poised for a U2-style international coup, but the Suburbs, despite its stadium-ready sonic grandiosity, was far too homespun and idiosyncratic to infect the masses in the same way as the Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby. Reflektor, the Montreal collective's much anticipated fourth long-player and first double-album, moves the group even further from pop culture sanctification with a seismic yet impenetrable 13-track set (at 75 minutes it’s one minute over standard single disc capacity) that guts the building but leaves the roof intact.
