I can’t help the feeling that Deutsche Grammophon have been keeping their young new signing Alice Sara Ott from us. For reasons best known to themselves, the label released this, her debut disc, in a number of countries in 2008, but held back in the UK until she had a second recording under her belt - of Chopin waltzes (DG 00289 477 8095). The double-whammy debut approach seems to have backfired a little, with many critics finding the Chopin too dry and emotionless and then projecting those criticisms, albeit in a milder form, onto the Liszt.

Franz Liszt's 'Etudes d'exйcution transcendante' are a document of the cult of instrumental virtuosity which flourished in the early 19th century. Spurred on by the legerdemain of Paganini and the technical and aesthetic groundbreaking of Chopin's etudes, Liszt endeavored to demonstrate the full-range possibilities in the modern piano. Toward that end he revised and improved the etudes several times over a period of two decades before they reached their definitive form in 1851. Cuban-born pianist Jorge Bolet was one of the great exponents of Romantic keyboard literature, reviving works by forgotten masters and specializing, above all, the music of Liszt. This recording, made in Barcelona in 1970, shows his familiar virtues, power with sparkle, elegance and spirit, and virtuosity displayed not as a matter of duty but of great joy.

Considered at the end of his adolescence as one of the greatest pianists in history, Franz Liszt was both visionary artist, entrepreneur, philanthropist, educator, and mundane scene of man. "It was a phenomenon," exclaims the pianist Daniil Trifonov, who dedicates the album Concert studies here, Transcendental, his illustrious predecessor. "Liszt changed music forever: how she had heard, she was played, what music could express - what it meant to be an artist.

Virtuosity and the Musical Work: The Transcendental Studies of Liszt by Jim Samson
English | Apr 7, 2003 | ISBN: 0521814944 | 250 Pages | PDF | 7 MB

This book is about three sets of etudes by Liszt: the Etude en douze exercices (1826); its reworking as Douzes grandes etudes (1837); and their reworking as Douzes etudes d'execution transcendante (1851). It is also a book about nineteenth-century instrumental music in general because the three works invite the exploration of features characteristic of the early Romantic era in music. These include a composer-performer culture; the concept of virtuosity; the significance of recomposition; music and the poetic; and the consolidation of a musical work-concept.

Emil Georg Conrad von Sauer (October 8, 1862 – April 27, 1942) was a notable German composer, pianist, score editor, and music (piano) teacher. He was a pupil of Franz Liszt and one of the most distinguished pianists of his generation. Josef Hofmann called von Sauer "a truly great virtuoso." Martin Krause, another Liszt pupil, called von Sauer "the legitimate heir of Liszt; he has more of his charm and geniality than any other Liszt pupil."
