Recorded between 1962 & 1981. The 1995 version of Anthology was remastered and slightly retooled from the 1986 reissue, which was in turn updated from the original triple-LP set Motown released in 1974. That first Anthology [1974] featured nothing from Let's Get It On or afterward; the newest Anthology adds even more from that era while subtracting a bit from Gaye's earlier years, including a few of his numerous duets. Even so, it still stands as a near-definitive document.

Larkin Arnold, former CBS Records (Sony Music) senior executive VP, convinced Marvin Gaye to leave his flat in Belgium and sign with Columbia Records; the result would become the soul singer's last album before his untimely death. Of all his number one songs, this album's first release, "Sexual Healing," became his longest running number one single on the Billboard R&B charts (ten straight weeks).

Marvin Gaye's 1970s recordings reflected his growing awareness of social issues–"What's Going On," "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)," "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)"–coupled with a freewheeling sexuality ("Let's Get It On," "Come Get to This," "I Want You"). On both counts, Gaye was out in front of the times, and helped shape the discussion during that turbulent time. This set does a good job of briefly limning the highlights of Gaye's '70s work; coupled with the 20th Century Masters companion volume of his '60s hits, it gives a fair if less than definitive overview of one of pop's most prolific and important hitmakers. –Daniel Durchholz

Like most entries in Universal Music's Millennium Collection (previously the province of MCA Records), The Best of Marvin Gaye, Vol. 1: The '60s is a solid budget-line collection containing 11 of his biggest hits from the '60s, including "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," "Pride and Joy," "Ain't That Peculiar, "Stubborn Kind of Fellow," "Can I Get a Witness," "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)," "Hitch Hike," and "You're a Wonderful One." There may be a few hits missing and serious listeners will probably like a more extensive compilation, but this is nevertheless an excellent bargain for its price. –Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Choice entrees featuring Marvin Gaye and his duet darlings, Mary Wells, Kim Weston, Tammi Terrell, and Diana Ross. Gaye's efforts with Diana Ross have only two representatives, but they both sizzle. "You're a Special Part of Me" and "My Mistake" had the potential to enter the Top 10 but neither did, though both made inroads on the charts. The former is an uptempo, lavish production with a driving beat. The latter is a lovely, deceivingly fast testimonial, Gaye's and Ross' voices gel on the delightful romp. Mary Wells, Gaye's first partner, teams with him for two songs, the two-sided hit they enjoyed, "Once Upon a Time," a floating, moody ballad, and the rollicking "What's the Matter with You Baby." Kim Weston fares better, four of her waxings with Gaye made the cut. Everyone's down with "It's Take Two," but are you familiar with the yearning, silky smooth "I Want You Round," or the melodic proclamation of bliss "It's Got to Be a Miracle (This Thing Called Love)"? Twelve of the 21 tracks are Gaye and Terrell sides.

One of the most gifted, visionary, and enduring talents ever launched into orbit by the Motown hit machine, Marvin Gaye blazed the trail for the continued evolution of popular black music. Moving from lean, powerful R&B to stylish, sophisticated soul to finally arrive at an intensely political and personal form of artistic self-expression, his work not only redefined soul music as a creative force but also expanded its impact as an agent for social change. Nicknamed The Prince of Soul, Marvin Gaye stands as one of history's greatest musical legends. From the husky whistle of Let’s Get It On to the disco kick of Got to Give it Up, Gaye’s music and style shaped the 1960s and 70s and his soulful harmonies and sensual, funk undertones continue to influence and popularise music today. In 1982, when he released Sexual Healing, People Magazine described him as “America’s hottest pop-culture turn on,” a statement that still rings true.

Here, My Dear is the fifteenth studio album by music artist Marvin Gaye, released December 15, 1978, on Motown-subsidiary label Tamla Records. Recording sessions for the album took place between 1977 and 1978 at Gaye's personal studios, Marvin Gaye Studios in Los Angeles, California. The album was notable for its subject matter's being dedicated to the fallout of Gaye's marriage to his first wife, Anna Gordy Gaye. Initially a commercial and critical failure upon its release, it was later hailed by music critics as one of Gaye's best produced albums in the years following Gaye's death.
