Classical / Jazz / Female Voices / Avant-Garde / Acappella / Experimental / Minimalism

Zorn’s compositions for acappella voice are some of his most sensual and sublime creations. This CD presents his two books of “Madrigals” scored for six female voices. Beautifully performed by his long time ensemble the “Sapphites” the music is even more varied and challenging than his previous masterpieces “The Holy Visions” and “Shir Hashirim,” touching upon minimalism, tonal and atonal counterpoint, textural experiments and more. Inspired by the visionary poetry of 19th century British Romantic Percy Blysse Shelley, a charming lyricism and subtle spirituality rides through the music from first note to last.

Although most of Heinrich Schütz's surviving music is for the church, his first published work was this set of Italian madrigals–a remarkable collection of pieces that perfectly capture the style while continually throwing off sparks of originality. Dedicated to a patron back in Germany who funded his two-year study in Venice with the great master, Giovanni Gabrieli, these 19 madrigals are rich in imagery and occasionally make tantalizingly brief forays into harmonic territory reminiscent of Gesualdo.

"Il Primo libro di Madrigali", Venedig, 1611, at Gardano

In a memorial from 1651, Heinrich Schutz gave an account of his life, retracting the formative years in Venice from 1609 when he began to "study music with the utmost diligence. With the help of God I attained such fame that after three years (one year before I left Italy for home) I had my first little piece of music printed in Italian, earning extravagant praise from the most distinguished musicians in Venice…"

Modo Antiquo, dir. Bettina Hoffmann

Volume 6 of this path-breaking series, the first to record every extant work by Girolamo Frescobaldi, focuses on the secular madrigals. These works - he wrote one book, and evidently hoped to write more - are no less innovatory than the keyboard works that so impressed and influenced J. S. Bach. […] The nineteen madrigals with which Frescobaldi introduced himself have an admirable clarity of formal design that gives each line its due weight in terms of duration and emotion, and a transparent counterpoint that favours delicacy over density as a stylistic means, homophonic and polyphonic sections being cleverly alternated. It is pleasing to see the respect that Frescobaldi pays to the texts: the words are set to graceful melodic phrases, and never obscured by excessive counterpoint, but interpreted literally with immediate attention to meaning. Classical / Renaissance / Early Music

In his publications, Luzzasco Luzzaschi (c. 1545-1607) presents himself, rather modestly as the Organist of the Serene Highness Duke of Ferrara. Accordingly, Luzzaschis reputation today is similarly modest; he is known, if at all, thanks only to the music he composed for the Concerto delle Dame an ensemble of virtuoso female singers at the dEste court in Ferrara. And yet, when his entire oeuvre is explored, one discovers that his music and influence are greater than could have been imagined. In fact, Luzzaschi was both musically and historically one of the central musical figures of the late Renaissance. This recording presents a broad picture of Luzzaschis oeuvre, selecting works in various genres, performed in historically informed settings with appropriate performance practices. While pieces for the Concerto delle Dame are included, one of the intentions of Profeti della Quinta is to highlight the fact that the rest of Luzzaschis output stands equally alongside these compositions.
