A top-notch adult contemporary vocalist still awaiting a well-deserved crossover commercial breakthrough, Marilyn Scott adds powerful fuel to her cause on Avenues of Love by helping herself with a well-balanced array of production and songwriting talent. George Duke surrounds her with party voices and a kneejerking Latin groove on a playful list of dance steps on "I Like to Dance," then surrounds her clear, sensuous voice with airy, billowing synth cushioning on the Bacharach-David classic "The Look of Love." Scott and bassist Jimmy Haslip reroute to Memphis on Michael Ruff's Wilson Pickett-like pick me up, "Love Is a Powerful Thing," engaging a two-piece horn section that sounds even larger. The Yellowjacket touch is in full effect on the picturesque "Avenida del Sol," which approximates an update of the gentle Astrud Gilberto sound; the tune was written by Scott and Bob Mintzer, and produced by Scott, Haslip, and Russell Ferrante. Scott's greatest gift here is her sense of modulation; she belts like crazy on the funk pieces, but recognizes the emotional power of restraint on the ballads.

The Spinners story begins in Detroit, hence how for UK audiences from 1967 they became originally known here as The Detroit Spinners. It was important they were not confused with the Liverpool folk group of the same name. Ultimately this was relaxed and on these reissues it should be clear we present the American vocal group we know best for It's A Shame, I'll Be Around and Could It Be I'm Falling In Love. The Spinners adopted many musical styles across the decades from 60s Motown then 70's Philly before arriving in the 80's with Michael Zager's "I Just Want To Be With You" on "Love Trippin'" (1980) and the two albums presented here from 1981. Labor Of Love engaged further with Michael Zager, Can't Shake The Feelin' a collaboration with James Mtume & Reggie Lucas from the period they were delivery success for Phyllis Hyman and Stephanie Mills. Terrific music here from a golden era of soul music by one of the genre's most iconic groups.

Sheila Cooper is a talented singer who also plays alto, or is she actually a Lee Konitz-inspired altoist who also sings? On Tales of Love and Longing, she performs duets with veteran pianist Fritz Pauer that – given her two talents – seem like trios. In keeping with the CD's title, most of the music is taken at slow tempos and has lyrics dealing with some aspect of love. A happy change of pace is a medium-tempo instrumental version of "How Deep Is the Ocean?" that, after four straight slow ballads, really wakes up the CD. Other departures include Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman," Cooper's original "I Gravitate to You," and her unaccompanied alto statement on "Body and Soul." But in general this is a set of slow ballads, sung with an aching longing and very sincere feeling by a subtle singer who shows a great deal of promise.
