As an interpreter of classic American popular songs from the 1930s and 1940s, vocalist and guitarist Rebecca Kilgore helped revive the hits of yesterday for modern-era jazz audiences. Born in Waltham, MA, in 1949, she relocated to Portland, OR, at the age of 30, beginning her music career fronting an area swing band dubbed the Wholly Cats and recording a 1982 LP titled Doggin' Around. Following the group's 1984 breakup, she formed her own unit, the Rebecca Kilgore Quintet, which quickly emerged as a mainstay of the Northwest jazz scene, and in 1989, she released the cassette-only I Hear Music.

One can almost hear Rebecca Kilgore smiling as she sings. Since she launched her jazz career, she's been a jazz party favorite and has often displayed a penchant for digging up forgotten songs. For these 2010 sessions, she shares the spotlight with some of her regular collaborators on record dates (most of whom she's shared the stage with as well), including guitarists Bucky and John Pizzarelli, bassist Martin Pizzarelli, tenor saxophonist Harry Allen, pianist Larry Fuller, drummer Tony Tedesco, and violinist Aaron Weinstein…

Out of the West Coast traditional jazz (often erroneously referred to as Dixieland) mold of Lu Watters, Turk Murphy, and the Firehouse Five Plus Two comes the Hal Smith Rhythmakers with guest, the undervalued but very talented singer Rebecca Kilgore. She also works a little on guitar. The regular Rhythmakers have also been expanded with the addition of three young musicians, to wit, trumpet player Marc Caparone, bass player Clint Baker, and pianist Chris Dawson. Together they have fashioned an album of Fats Waller melodies ranging from the infectious swinging material he was famous for as well as some very pretty melodies, most, but not all, penned with Andy Razaf.

“Time and Again” is acoustic guitarist Bob Kilgore’s fifth album, joined throughout by his brother Bear on keyboards and percussion, and Sarah Dean on cello. As the inventor of a device called the harmonic capo, Bob kept his invention to himself for many years until he introduced it to the world in 2007. Combining elements of world, jazz, classical, solo acoustic and contemporary instrumental, Bob has crafted a dynamic and edgy, yet sophisticated album, full of intricate detail and vivid, colorful tones. There is a nocturnal quality to most of the pieces, with lots of minor chords and a frequent exotic flare.

First off. There isn’t a moment on this CD, whatever the mood or tempo, that doesn’t swing. And it’s a deep intuitive swing: take, for example, the a cappella chorus that begins WHEN I GROW TOO OLD TO DREAM. With all due respect to the instrumental accompaniment — a fine band — Becky and Nicki are swinging in the best understated but authentic Basie manner when they utter the first syllable. And their voices — alternatively lighter, darker, flying, trading places in mid-air — go together perfectly, whether they are alternating phrases within a song, singing in unison or harmonizing.

Jazz singer Rebecca Kilgore was an ideal choice for this tribute to the later years of Maxine Sullivan's recording career. Kilgore is a student of the music of her predecessors, and her voice is in many ways similar to Sullivan's. Jazz fans will recall that Sullivan had a two-part career, singing "Loch Lomond" and similar songs with a big band, then dropping out of sight to raise her children and work in health care before re-emerging about 20 years ago to sing an entirely different genre of songs. This CD, issued by George Buck's Audiophile label, features tunes from the latter era, including "Harlem Butterfly," "Keepin' Out of Mischief Now," "A Hundred Years From Today," "We Just Couldn't Say Goodbye," "As Long As I Live" and "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams." Backed by the wonderful clarinetist Bobby Gordon and his trio of Kilgore-friend Hal Smith on drums and Chris Dawson on piano, Kilgore sings 17 songs (including two versions of "Harlem Butterfly") while providing 72+ minutes of wonderful singing.
