Quiles and Cloud - Shake Me Now (2017)
Folk, Alt Country, Americana | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 00:48:56 | 113 MB
Label: Compass Records | Release Year: 2017

Shake Me Now is stripped-down, yet dense. There are musical and lyrical traces of the blues, bluegrass, folk, rock, soul, and classical music. Their songwriting stands out on the title track, "Shake Me Now" as well as the upbeat and hopeful "One My Way Tonight". In addition to their original songs, there are reinterpreted versions of the traditional blues number "Deep Ellum Blues", the traditional folk tune "Worried Man Blues", and Bob Dylan's "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere". One gets the feeling of being on a widescreen road trip through America's past and present, with multiple eras and traditions folding in upon each other. The result sounds familiar and road-worn, yet completely new a quality that Quiles & Cloud share with some of American music's greatest innovators.

4.5 stars. Easily becoming one of my favourite Jad Warrior albums. I highly recommend this album to fans of Porcupine Tree, David Sylvian solo, Pink Floyd, Mike Oldfield, Flower Kings, Steve Morse-era Deep Purple, Djivan Gasparyan, Dead Can Dance, Elbow, old and modern King Crimson, David Gilmour solo, later period Talk Talk, Michael Brook and Rush(yes…Rush!). Also, throw in the kitchen sink with _world musics_ and the mid-period chamber rock/ambient works of '74-'78 Jade Warrior…

NOW That’s What I Call Mum is laden with mum-friendly bangers, ranging from driving-to-the-gym pump-up tracks to X Factor judges’ house’s round staples. Don’t think your mum doesn’t like to “become lit” though, as she paraphrases, with NTWICM also featuring unequivocally fine, nostalgia-mining songs ‘7 Days’ by Craig David, ‘Complicated’ by Avril Lavigne and ‘Oops!…I Did It Again’ by Britney Spears.

Blues / Traditional Blues / Delta Blues / Electric Blues / Memphis Blues

If you love the Blues, these sets provide some of the greatest songs all in one collection. You need these in your collection. It's very hard to characterize "Memphis blues," even though all blues started at Memphis. This is more delta blues, but still a good collection. Some of what we call "Chicago blues" is more of "toned up" Memphis blues. Not so much of that here, and it should've been included. Old school Blues with a large selection of music and great artist, enjoyed it.

Fans of Martha Davis and the Motels have reason to rejoice, whether they first embraced the new wave band during the early '80s when the Motels came roaring out of Los Angeles with their blockbusters "Only The Lonely" and "Suddenly Last Summer" for Capitol Records, or in their more recent and equally powerful incarnation. Martha has assembled a collection of extreme rarities for this collection spotlighting her at the height of her formidable vocal power.

Since 2009, the band has toured much of the United States and released two albums, racking up placements in television, national commercials, and the multi-million-selling video game Watch Dogs. Starlight covers musical ground as diverse as the city that spawned TRN: dance beat elation, gritty torch songs, and synth-pop granduer. Stefanie Berecz's 'classic and contemporary voice' (Philadelphia Inquirer) sits atop breezy horn lines and intricate arrangements. Dubbed 'the real deal' (Pittsburgh City Paper) and 'sweet soul satisfaction' (Nashville Scene), TRN has opened for Fitz & The Tantrums, George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic, Bettye LaVette, Lee Fields, and many others; their 2012 release Gets Over You received airplay from Seattle to Ashville and hit the CMJ Top 200 charts.

These kinds of collections date quickly, but they still provide an interesting snapshot of contemporary country radio at a specific moment in time.

Indie Pop, Singer-Songwriter | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 41:07 min | 94.7 MB
Label: Secretly Canadian | Tracks: 10 | Rls.date: 2017

Jens Lekman has announced his new album, Life Will See You Now, due out February 17th via Secretly Canadian. Across three studio albums, the Swedish singer/songwriter and musician has proven not only his flair for telling very personal stories with a sharp self-awareness, but also his skill for balancing depth of emotional expression with droll and often self-deprecating detail. It's a winning pop combination. His fourth, Life Will See You Now is a typical Lekman album in several ways: sly humor is key to its heartfelt nature; it inverts pop's writing norm by making songs with sad concerns sound happy and songs with a happy subject sound sad; and it plays with notions of identity and the self.

Jesca Hoop's album Memories Are Now wastes no time in making clear its confidence, confrontation, and craftsmanship. The stark and reverberant title track opens the album with "a fighting spirit," says Hoop, serving as an anthem to push through any obstacle and put forth your very best work. And she has unequivocally done that here, with an album of stunningly original songs–minimalist yet brimming with energy, emerging from a wealth of life experience, great emotional depth, and years of honing the craft of singing.
