Nina Simone's combination of classical training, smokey-alto vocal delivery and the influence of modern jazz made her a novel and inspiring jazz singer and instrumentalist. And her very name is synonymous with the passion, talent and raw emotion that she put into every note she sang and played. The Phillips Years is a fine collection of seven albums released by Simone during her tenure on the label from 1964-1967. Simone's albums covered topics as diverse as romance, politics, Broadway, civil rights and more.

Nina Simone was one of the most gifted vocalists of her generation, and also one of the most eclectic. Simone was a singer, pianist, and songwriter who bent genres to her will rather than allowing herself to be confined by their boundaries; her work swung back and forth between jazz, blues, soul, classical, R&B, pop, gospel, and world music, with passion, emotional honesty, and a strong grasp of technique as the constants of her musical career. Nina Simone was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in Tryon, North Carolina on February 21, 1933. Her mother, Mary Kate Waymon, was a Methodist minister, and her father, John Divine Waymon…

As is often noted, Simone is a dynamic and powerful vocal interpreter who often brought her social consciousness directly into her artistry. Some of the material on this record would have been considered topical for the period when it was first issued. Much of it still retains the emotional power of its original time. Ignore the liner note hyperbole; this is in fact certainly some of the BEST of Simone.

Nina Simone was a singular artist, and she went where she pleased, leaving behind a recorded legacy that is passionate, political, defiant, and delicate by turns, no matter what strain of folk, blues, jazz, or gospel she was dipping into, and she did it all with dignity, grace, and intelligence…

The title, The Nina Simone Collection, and the sheer number of tracks assembled here. This box set offers a carefully compiled overview of this great singer's catalog. Confirm this: many of Simone's most important benchmarks are accounted for: "I Loves You Porgy," "To Be Young, Gifted and Black," "My Baby Just Cares for Me," "Mississippi Goddam," "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," et. al.

As a Nina lover, I liked this CD. It makes a good effort at bringing together a varied combination of tunes to give an overview of her musical versatility and possibly a great way to introduce her work to someone who may not know much about it (and believe it or not, there are quite a few people out there!). The choice of songs is interesting because there's a bit of everything… love, despair, hope, anger…
I disagree with other reviews that question the choice of recordings because of her voice. I think you can appreciate the maturity of her voice in some of the songs and of course, she was not going to sound like in the 60s forever, but I think that until her last performance she made songs her own and the strength of her character and performance came across every time.

Eunice Kathleen Waymon's beautiful, mellifluous voice is one of the most distinctive and celebrated in music. As Nina Simone she recorded over forty albums during a long and distinguished career that stretched over five decades. Nina recorded for Philips from 1964-1966. This "best of" contains 10 songs that made up the original U.S. LP release of this collection, plus the additional tracks "Ne Me Quitte Pas" and "The Other Woman", both songs which are closely associated with Nina.

There is a remarkable amount of variety on this disc, Nina Simone’’s second recording. Her repertoire ranges from a swinging “Stompin’’ at the Savoy” and an emotional “It Might as Well Be Spring” to an English folk ballad ("Tomorrow"), spirituals, an R&B song ("You’’ve Been Gone Too Long") and the theme song from the movie Middle of the Night. Somehow Simone brings credibility to each of these very different songs. She does not play much piano (just cameos on two songs) and is backed by a subtle orchestra arranged by Bob Mersey that is effective accompanying her vocals. This session finds Nina Simone’’s voice in top form and with a few exceptions is generally jazz-oriented.–allmusic.com
