Excellent addition to any prog rock music collection
What a mindblowing debut-album this is! The very melodic and harmonic music from this five-piece band is based upon an incredible dynamic and propulsive rhythm-section and splendid, very exciting Hammond organ work, often accompanied by a powerful and fiery electric guitar. The interplay between the musicians is magnificent and the excertions on keyboards and guitar are very compelling, in the spirit of the late Sixties and early Seventies.

Phil Collins - Face Value (1981). Phil Collins' first solo album, 1981's Face Value, was a long time coming, but it proved worth the wait, both for the Genesis drummer/vocalist himself and fans of thoughtful, emotionally charged pop. He'd been wrestling with the idea of doing a solo record for years, finding great inspiration in the pain caused by an impending divorce and craving artistic independence after years of collaboration. Many of the songs ended up on Genesis' 1980 album Duke - and "Against All Odds" was pocketed for later use - but he kept enough to make an album that stands as a classic moment of '80s pop/rock. Collins produced the album himself and played keyboards and drums, calling in friends and the Earth, Wind & Fire horns to fill out the songs…

Sometimes while trudging through the bargain bins you find a cd worth buying. This is one of them. Yellow Pearl is an inexpensive way of owning the 'best' of Phil's solo material. I was never a big fan of his solo stuff, but this contains anything worth listening to again and again. No real rarities, but it does have Gary Moore's version of Parisienne Walkways with Phil on vocals. Which was the best thing on Gary's Back On The Street solo release. Most the stuff on here is Lynott trying to sound like a contemporary artist from that time (early 80's). Ugghh. Synths, bad percussion, electronic drums? Phil is "The Rocker". Period. End of the story. His life was over way too soon, and is missed. Stick to the Thin Lizzy material, and spread their music to the unitiated. We'll all be better for it.
