This release features the complete sonatas and variations for fortepiano and violoncello, recorded on period instruments. In this collaboration, Matt Haimovitz plays his own Goffriller cello, crafted in Venice, Italy in 1710 – outfitted with ox-gut strings also from Italy and an early 19th century rosewood tailpiece and drawn by a Dominique Peccatte bow of the same era, while Christopher O’Riley plays on an original Broadwood fortepiano made in 1823.

This reissue box collects the entire cycle of Mozart keyboard sonatas, plus single-movement works, recorded by Austrian pianist Paul Badura-Skoda on a 1790 Schantz fortepiano that he himself owns. The six CDs included were originally recorded between 1978 and 1990 for a group of related French labels; the budget-price reissue on Naïve is a bit atypical for that label, which has specialized in innovative and lavishly designed full-priced releases. Online retail presentations may not make clear that they are fortepiano recordings, recordings made on a keyboard instrument probably very much like one Mozart would have played himself.

Methodo de Pianoforte

José Maurício Nunes Garcia - Methodo de Pianoforte - Ruth Serrão
Classical | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 98 MB | 2008

Methodo de Pianoforte (Piano Method), a pedagogical work written in 1821 for Nunes Garcia's son, Apollinário José, comprises a collection of pieces, delightful for studying, playing and listening, arranged in two series of 12 lessons and 6 Fantasias. (…) Beside original melodies, José Maurício didn't hesitate quoting other composers, thus we find Haydn in the 7th lesson of the 2nd part, and Rossini in the 5th lesson of the 2nd part; he has also quoted his own melodies, as in the lessons 9, 11 and 12 of the 1st part, which use melodies from his exquisite Requiem. (…)

Ruth Serrão, pianist and teacher, whose dedication to brazilian music is worthy of the greatest praises, amalgamates here her work, started in 1980, rescuing José Maurício's oeuvre for the keyboard.
