It's impossible to summarize the remarkable career of Placido Domingo in the span of a single disc, but The Best of Placido Domingo is an admirable showcase of the attributes that have assured the singer a place among the greatest tenors of all time. First and foremost, there is the voice an extraordinarily rich instrument that he wields with power, grace, and unerring musicianship. Domingo is also renowned for his versatility. This 2CD 'Very Best Of' collection features Placido Domingo performing a wide selection of arias taken from works by Mozart, Handel, Puccini, Verdi and many more. Plácido Domingo has effectively and prolifically recorded for a number of labels, both "major" and "minor." For any one of them to come forward with a package purporting to be The Very Best of Plácido Domingo is presupposing a lot. Although a few of the recordings in this two-disc compilation come from the early '70s, the vast majority are late-career performances from the 1980s and 1990s. Domingo took care of his instrument longer than practically any other male singer in the late twentieth century; that said, this two-disc set is not so much Domingo's "very best" as it is some of the better performances from a period where he was a little past his prime.

I grew up with Placido Domingo. Not in the sense of being boyhood friends, but rather in the sense that he was part of my "Golden Age" at the Metropolitan Opera. Of the "Three Tenors" (more Marketing hype than useful grouping of three fine singers) Domingo was the most dramatic - the "heaviest" of the three. His repertoire extended well beyond the lyric - and that's why this collection is not all the "essential" Domingo, but rather offers an interesting look at the lighter, more lyric side of Placido Domingo. You won't find Lohengrin or Otello here, but you will find many of the more lyric tenor arias from Verdi, Puccini and Donizetti - to name a few.

Nick Cave is a singular figure in contemporary rock music; he first emerged as punk rock was making its presence known in Australia, but though he's never surrendered his status as a provocateur and a musical outlaw, he quickly abandoned the simplicity of punk for something grander and more literate, though no less punishing in its outlook…

As hateful and usually untrue as most "Best of" collections are, this one is the real thing. You actually do get two hours and 20 minutes of Renaissance music performed so exquisitely, so correctly, and so passionately that it's as if an entire era in music makes itself understood through these CDs. The Tallis Scholars are as good as it gets in this repertoire. In addition to getting Allegri's gorgeous Miserere, you'll find Thomas Tallis's 40-part (40!) Spem in alium, some wonderfully weird and dissonant Responsories by Gesualdo, Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli (the "how-to" piece of the Renaissance popes, who demanded that the words be understood), and various other works. This stuff is like a finely woven tapestry and should be listened to bits at a time–it's amazingly rich and worth it.
