It's impossible to summarize the remarkable career of Placido Domingo in the span of a single disc, but The Best of Placido Domingo is an admirable showcase of the attributes that have assured the singer a place among the greatest tenors of all time. First and foremost, there is the voice an extraordinarily rich instrument that he wields with power, grace, and unerring musicianship. Domingo is also renowned for his versatility. He has always explored diverse areas of operatic literature and challenged himself artistically through a wide variety of roles. This 2CD 'Very Best Of' collection features Placido Domingo performing a wide selection of arias taken from works by Mozart, Handel, Puccini, Verdi and many more. Plácido Domingo has effectively and prolifically recorded for a number of labels, both "major" and "minor." For any one of them to come forward with a package purporting to be The Very Best of Plácido Domingo is presupposing a lot. Although a few of the recordings in this two-disc compilation come from the early '70s, the vast majority are late-career performances from the 1980s and 1990s. Domingo took care of his instrument longer than practically any other male singer in the late twentieth century; that said, this two-disc set is not so much Domingo's "very best" as it is some of the better performances from a period where he was a little past his prime.

I grew up with Placido Domingo. Not in the sense of being boyhood friends, but rather in the sense that he was part of my "Golden Age" at the Metropolitan Opera. Of the "Three Tenors" (more Marketing hype than useful grouping of three fine singers) Domingo was the most dramatic - the "heaviest" of the three. His repertoire extended well beyond the lyric - and that's why this collection is not all the "essential" Domingo, but rather offers an interesting look at the lighter, more lyric side of Placido Domingo. You won't find Lohengrin or Otello here, but you will find many of the more lyric tenor arias from Verdi, Puccini and Donizetti - to name a few.

The Best of Ultravox is a fairly comprehensive compilation that disregards the era during which guitarist Robin Simon and vocalist John Foxx were in the group. It's actually comprehensive to a fault, since it's a little too fair to the group's later and lesser singles off 1986's U-Vox – an album that was almost as poor as its title…

Modern Electric Blues, Chicago Blues | Silvertone Records #0591232

Buddy Guy revitalized his career when he signed with Silvertone Records in the early '90s. His first album for the label, Damn Right, I've Got the Blues, was a smash success, earning critical acclaim, awards, and sales hand over fist. Prior to that record, he was a legend only among blues fans; afterward, he was a star. Although it was a bit too rock-oriented and slick for purists, Damn Right was a terrific album, setting the pace not only for Guy but for modern electric blues in the '90s. As the decade wore on, Guy continued to make albums for Silvertone, some of them a little complacent, others quite excellent…

Guy Clark, channeler of the human condition, plainspoken poet, master luthier, seasoned painter and damn fine guitar player, was above all a man. Probably the closest thing to Hemingway Nashville - or the Lone Star State - would ever see: lean prose, gut strings ringing and a hard-won dignity that embraced tenderness as the ultimate manifest of toughness.
