Mexican culture is as diverse as its landscape. Its roots stretch back thousands of years to the Aztec, Maya, Zapotec and other Native American empires. Echoes of these indigenous cultures still resound loudly in the modern setting, informing all cultural expressions including language, food, art, architecture and, of course, music. While the Spanish imposed their language, culture and religion on the local populations, the result of 500 years of cross-cultural fusion is a remarkable blend of European and Native American culture, with elements of African influence sprinkled along the Gulf and Pacific coasts.

Celtic Café features exceptional Irish and Scottish singer-songwriters performing a blend of modern and traditional acoustic Celtic music. In time for St. Patrick’s Day, Putumayo World Music presents Celtic Café, a collection that celebrates the powerful singer-songwriter movement and the burgeoning café culture in Ireland and Scotland. Cafés in Dublin, Edinburgh and the rest of the Celtic world have become alternative outposts to the archetypal pub; both are ideal settings to enjoy acoustic Celtic music. Celtic Café features exceptional Irish and Scottish artists performing contemporary Celtic music often rooted in ancient tradition. The collection also includes a recipe for the classic Irish coffee, a beverage that provides a perfect blend of pub and café drinks.

The artists gathered together here hail from nations and cultures noted for the growing and export of coffee. As with this CD's companion release, Music from the Tea Lands, one senses the possibility of lucrative product tie-ins, but part of the proceeds from the album are earmarked for charity and any catchy idea that gets the music out there is a good thing. Like the luscious drink itself, the tunes come in many intensities and flavors, ranging from a light-as-air ditty from Peru, to the more complex vocal stylings of Colombia's Claudia Gomez, to Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca's earthy Afro-Cuban Congolese rumba. The album is a lively and fascinating travelogue, making landfall in Cuba, Kenya, Brazil, Uganda, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Costa Rica, Hawaii, and Peru. As with many other Putumayo projects, aside from its musical pleasures, this set would make an entertaining and educational experience for younger family members.

Putumayo Presents Carnival is a rousing collection of world music suited for the purpose of annual street parades, large-scale block parties, and whooping it up in all the festooned finery of Mardi Gras. Only two songs here, Eddie Bo's "I Know You Mardi Gras" and Kermit Ruffins's "Kermit's Second Line," hail from New Orleans. The other eight tracks come from such carnival traditions as the world-famous Brazilian Rio de Janiero throw-down represented by Martinho Da Vila's "Canta Canta, Minha Gente" and Cuba's shindig celebrated here by the Cuarteto Patria, led by guitarist Eliades Ochoa, renowned for his Buena Vista Social Club contribution. Haitian band King Posse turn in one of the most fun performances with "Retounen," a booty-busting blend of reggae, hip-hop, and Haitian compas. With few exceptions, these cuts haven't been released outside their native countries, and as with all Putumayo compilations, Carnival comes with fantastic liner notes detailing both the artists and the carnivals of their homelands.

Music from the Chocolate Lands offers a rich selection of songs from the world’s chocolate producing countries. Chocolate has been enjoyed for thousands of years. Used for medicinal and religious purposes, as well as for pleasure, traces of this "food of the gods" have been found in early Mayan pots dating back to 600 B.C.E. Europeans added sugar to the exotic concoction, and the chocolate craze gradually spread throughout the world. Now the cacao plant, which provides the raw cocoa beans for chocolate, is farmed in tropical locations around the globe, often far away from its Central and South American origins.

From Putumayo's children's division, Sing Along With Putumayo is a decent attempt to make an American roots music album engineered for kids. The bulk of the artists here aren't really from the children's music genre at all, but they sweeten their songs a bit for these recordings. The album opens up with a simple folky piece from Arlo Guthrie, then proper kids' songs from bluegrassers Rhonda Vincent and Tim O'Brien.

Gypsy music from central Europe is collected in one of the most upbeat and happy putumayo albums. The "traveling people", or Roma, have one of the most colorful and complex musical cultures of the planet. Travel with Gypsy Caravan through various European countries and enjoy great Romani music in its many versatile forms like the klezmer style of Romanyi Rota, the more folkish quality of Ando Drom, the flamenco of both Thierry Robin and Miguel Angel Cortés, or the french jazzy guitar of Coco Briaval's tribute to Django Reinhardt. Another putumayo's "chef d' oeuvre".

Without doubt one of the most beautiful albums from putumayo. Wonderful exotic music mostly popularized by the unforgettable "barefoot" diva Cesaria Evora, has Portuguese and African influences and is a gorgeous melange of elegant piano, acoustic strings, rousing horn sections, propulsive drumming, flamboyant keyboards, and superb vocalists. Enjoy a sweet and exotic journey to the musical paradise of Cape Verde. An album you'll want to hear again and again.
