Catharism was the name given to a Christian religious sect that appeared in the Languedoc region of what is now southern France and flourished in the 12th and 13th centuries. The Cathars saw matter as intrinsically evil. They denied that Jesus could become incarnate and still be the son of God and thus, the Catholic Church regarded the sect as dangerously heretical. Faced with what they saw as a rapidly spreading cancer, the Church called for a crusade, which was carried out by knights from Northern France and Germany and was known as the Albigensian Crusade. This campaign, and the inquisition that followed it, eradicated the Cathars completely. It also had the effect of weakening the semi- independent southern principalities in the area, ultimately bringing them under direct control of the King of France.

The trio reunited in 2011 and released their self-titled first album on Laborie Jazz (France) to widespread critical acclaim.

A true collective project, each band member composes music for the Trio and aims to create a fresh and forward-thinking overall sound. The band's music is strongly influenced by popular music. The core of it all remains modern jazz, which profoundly enriches the compositions and improvisations without ever burdening them.

This formation is led by Gerard Zuchetto and sings Occitan troubadours ballads from 12th and 13th centuries, the same Medieval songs which gave rise to the first modern literature of Europe. An Alchemy of words and sounds, emotions and accents, of Medieval sobriety and contemporary minimalism into the music, a living art to transport us to the most profound sentiment of Occitan poetry.
Higtly effective instrumentation and a subtil use of voices help to put together a performance which has won the seal of approval of the most stringent international festivals and which also demonstrate a capacity to surprise audiences unfamiliar with this kind of music.

This is a prominent and engaging attempt to reconstruct the Andalusí-Magrebi music of the Arabic era in Spain. Of course, beyond its intrinsic musical merits, this is an illustrative repertory with interesting implications for the later Spanish & Provençal repertory.
